The successful candidate will have a diverse role that combines supporting the high school canteen with developing and delivering engaging food literacy programs, contributing to a positive and educational food environment for students. This role requires technical food skills, a strong understanding of nutrition, and a passion for promoting healthy eating habits.
ResponsibilitiesResponsibilities: Canteen Operations support: Assist with daily food preparation and service in the high school canteen, adhering to standardized recipes, portion control, and food safety guidelines.Operate kitchen equipment (e.g., ovens, grills, fryers) safely and efficiently.Maintain a clean and organized work environment in the canteen, including cleaning and sanitizing all food preparation areas, equipment, and storage spaces.Assist with stock management, including receiving deliveries, rotating stock, and maintaining appropriate storage conditions.Adhere to all food safety regulations and hygiene standards.Provide friendly and efficient customer service to students and staff.Contribute to menu planning for the canteen, ensuring nutritional balance, variety, and appeal to students.Stay up to date on current nutrition guidelines and dietary recommendations for adolescents.May provide basic nutrition education to students.Food Literacy Education: Develop and deliver engaging food literacy programs (either through lunchtime clubs or in classes with teachers) and workshops for students, incorporating themes of healthy eating, nutrition, and food sustainability.Create educational materials and activities that promote healthy food choices and culinary skills.Assist with cooking demonstrations, potentially incorporating produce from school gardens, and interactive workshops.Collaborate with teachers, staff, and community organizations to integrate food literacy into the curriculum and school environment.Teach VET programs (future) offered by the College in Hospitality, Kitchen Operations and Event Management.Technician and Curriculum Support: Collaborate with food technology teachers to prepare resources for practical classes.Set up and maintain food technology equipment, ensuring functionality and safety. Conduct routine safety checks, obtain quotes and servicing of equipment as needed.Order, shop or source supplies for ingredients for practical classes each week, collate individual food orders, manage inventory and reorder cleaning supplies as needed, maintaining records and receipts of orders and usage of consumables.Safe handling, storage and disposal of food products using food safety standards and regulations. Storage of food to ensure quality and shelf life is maintained.Maintain cleanliness of all food technology spaces, including food prep areas, equipment and storage areas. Ensure all food technology kitchen surfaces and equipment are cleaned and sanitised after every lesson as well as refrigerators/freezers, stoves and microwaves.Laundering of tea towels, cleaning cloths and aprons after each class.Provide general administrative support such as preparing correspondence, data entry, ability to access Compass, email and ordering systems e.g ClassCart.Assist with maintaining records related to health and safety audits, equipment maintenance logs, Safety Data sheets and SafeWork Procedures templates.Prepare ingredients, tools, and equipment ahead of classes, ensuring all resources are available for teacher demonstration and students food production for each practical class.Assist in practical lessons, providing technical support to students with ingredient allocation, cleaning, and equipment use.Inventory & Ordering: Assist with ordering, receiving, and managing inventory for both the canteen and food technology classes.Maintain records of orders, usage of consumables, and equipment maintenance.Classroom Student Assistance: (up to 50% of allocated time during scheduled classes) Support identified or allocated students requiring additional classroom assistance as part of the PSD (program for students with disabilities) and follow all integration aide processes for designated students.Working with students; assisting with school improvement projects such in hospitality, cooking and catering.Other: Participate in team meetings and professional development opportunities.Assist with administrative tasks as needed, including preparing correspondence, data entry, and using relevant software (e.g., Compass).Maintain accurate records related to health and safety audits, equipment maintenance logs, Safety Data Sheets, and SafeWork Procedures templates.Who May ApplyIndividuals with the aptitude, experience and/or qualifications to fulfill the specific requirements of the position.
