Controller Hobart and William Smith Colleges Location: Geneva, NY Open Date: Mar 18, 2024 Description Lead the Business Office for the Colleges. Responsible for the financial accounting and tax regulation reporting, analyses, and related communications to campus and divisional leaders. Manage the general ledger and all supplemental information, direct the cash management system, maintain investment records, facilitate the annual external audits of the financial statements, and other related duties. Supervise the Business Office professional staff. RESPONSIBILITIES: Direct and coordinate all Business Office functions. These include but are not limited to, grant accounting and compliance, cash management, accounting and financial reporting, and endowment and fixed asset accounting. Facilitate day-to-day operations and interaction with other College departments with oversight, mentoring, and professional development responsibilities for three direct reports within Business Office. Ensure all financial transactions are recorded and reconciled on a timely basis and that they are recorded following generally accepted accounting principles. Prepare financial reports for internal and external use and act as liaison with external auditors. Examples of external reports are the Colleges' annual financial statements, reports of expenditures of all federal funds, IRS Form 990 and 990T, deferred giving, taxes, and various surveys/compliance reports. Establish protocols for collection of cash from locations across campus and ensure appropriate internal controls are in place to safeguard cash, including timely deposits, procedures for bank transfers, control of disbursements and cash flow needs. Maintain records of investments, including both pooled funds and individual investments. Manage receipt and disbursement of federal/state funds, facilities and administrative cost rates, and private grant funds in accordance with applicable regulations and donor agreements, working, as appropriate with Financial Aid, the Provost's Office, and other campus offices or, in the case of shared grants, with other institutions. Develop and maintain institutional and departmental policies, procedures, and reporting mechanisms to comply with federal, state, and local laws and regulations, and to enhance Business Office systems. Assure high level of departmental service with both internal and external constituencies. Facilitate initiatives/projects that improve the functionality of various systems and services provided by the Business Office (ERP, Endowment Management and other applications) utilized by the Colleges. Assist the Vice President for Finance in Trustee Committee preparation and reporting as needed. Perform other relevant duties and special projects as requested. OTHER INFORMATION This is a full-time, 12-month, benefits-eligible administrative salaried position. Qualifications Bachelors degree in accounting, business, or related field. MBA, CPA, or equivalent job experience a plus. 7-10 years experience in accounting, preferably in higher education desired. Demonstrated leadership in managing automated accounting systems, and knowledge of current accounting and financial reporting standards for colleges and universities. Demonstrated knowledge of tax regulations and operations. Collaborative and strong leadership, effective oral and written communication skills essential. Knowledge of PeopleSoft also preferred.
