About the role The role of Principal Solicitor is a senior member of the Commercial Law team, which sits within the Legal and Legislation Branch. Our role is to provide high quality legal and legislative advice and services on a broad range of matters across the Department of Jobs, Skills, Industry and Regions. There is always a great variety of interesting work. The Department covers a diverse range of portfolios, including: Jobs and Industry Creative Industries Tourism, Sport and Major Events Economic Growth Skills and TAFE Medical Research Small Business Regional Development, and Employment. The types of legal issues you will deal with are predominantly commercial and contractual matters, and issues arising from the administration of portfolio legislation. You will advise a diverse client group including regional staff, policy officers and decision makers. About you We welcome applications from commercial lawyers with in-house, government or private practice experience. To succeed in the role, you will need: Extensive experience in negotiation and drafting a wide range of complex legal documentation particularly in the commercial context. Demonstrated ability to provide strategic and authoritative advice on complex legal, legislative and policy issues under tight timelines. Ability to liaise effectively and work collaboratively with key stakeholders and to provide advice to the senior executive and Ministers. Demonstrated ability to work autonomously with minimal supervision and take a leadership role in a team environment. Strong ability to work constructively and effectively in managing competing priorities, working within strict timelines, and delegating and supervising the work of members within the team.
