This senior role offers an exciting opportunity to shape and influence the development of advanced telecommunications networks that support electricity distribution and transmission businesses. As a Principal Engineer, you will be expected to take ownership of high-level decision-making, mentor junior engineers, and ensure that complex telecommunications systems operate seamlessly in support of mission-critical energy infrastructure. The role requires excellent communication skills to effectively collaborate with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, manage projects, and drive innovation within the team. Occasional travel and after-hours work may be necessary to ensure project milestones are met. Key Responsibilities: Take the lead in the design, installation, testing, and commissioning of telecommunications systems, focusing on IP-based networking, optical technologies, and power line carrier systems. Develop and implement secure network and security infrastructure, ensuring reliable, high-performance communication for mission-critical applications. Manage and mentor a team of field-based technicians and subcontractors, ensuring efficient project execution and the highest standards of quality. Oversee network infrastructure upgrades and support services, with a focus on LAN/WAN design, installation, configuration, and troubleshooting. Conduct thorough technical reviews, security audits, and quality assurance for all related documentation. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure the ongoing operation and management of ICT infrastructure that supports real-time business systems. Qualifications and Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Engineering or a related field, or equivalent professional experience. At least 7 years of experience in telecommunications, with extensive expertise in network and security infrastructure design and implementation. Deep knowledge of IP-based systems, including MPLS, PDH/SDH multiplexers, DWDM systems, and LAN/WAN architecture. Expertise with VHF, UHF, fibre, microwave, and power line carrier technologies, as well as telecommunications DC power systems (chargers, solar power solutions). Familiarity with SCADA systems, protection signaling, and real-time telemetry networks is highly desirable. Preferred Expertise: Proven experience in testing, fault finding, and commissioning telecommunications networks, including Factory or Site Acceptance Testing. Strong background in project and design management, with a track record of delivering complex network infrastructure projects on time and within budget. In-depth knowledge of cybersecurity practices, distributed energy resources (DERMS), and ICT infrastructure management. Proficiency in CAD tools and familiarity with electricity network operations and SCADA control systems.
