About the Role
To assist the RN manage the school health program consistent with the guidelines, regulations and statutes governing school health.
Responsibilities
1. Assess and evaluate student health, including screenings (vision, hearing, scoliosis), height, weight and vital signs when appropriate.
2. Input Emergency information and immunizations into computer.
3. Maintain health records according to state law and school policy via paper files and computer.
4. Observe school facilities and assist RN with modifications necessary to maintain optimum health and safety for students and school personnel in accordance with the DPH School Health Guidelines.
5. Respond to frequently encountered health problems.
6. Maintain confidentiality of students.
7. Participate in in-service training programs.
8. Provide input for student's nursing assessment report.
9. Float to other CAPS Programs as needed for nursing coverage.
10. Respond to child abuse and/or neglect.
11. Support student progress with activities of daily living.
12. Support student's Individual Health Care Plan.
13. Support students with educational programming as directed by RN and classroom teacher.
14. Provide input regarding purchase order requests for medical supplies as needed for the entire program or classroom specific.
15. Complete and submit incident reports and related documentation when needed to report injury to student or staff.
16. Participate in staff meetings as required.
17. Maintain professional boundaries and ensure student/staff confidentiality as appropriate within the educational team.
18. Contribute to professional growth and collaboration by staying informed on current literature/resources in the field and actively participating in staff meetings and professional development opportunities.
Candidate Requirements
1. Current Massachusetts Practical Nursing License.
2. Experience in School Health nursing preferred.
3. Clinical knowledge of health, developmental disabilities, behavior and social needs of children ages 3-22 years.
4. Maintain CPR certification from a recognized provider.
5. Current training in routine health screenings (vision, hearing and postural).
6. Effective oral and written communication skills.
7. Computer skills preferred.
8. Cope with the mental, emotional and physical stresses of the position.
9. Be in good general health and demonstrate emotional stability.
10. Provide simple first aid to students and staff with minor injuries.
