About the team
Questacon – The National Science and Technology Centre is a division of the department. Questacon’s vision is for Australians to be inspired by science and technology and the opportunities it creates for the future, and Questacon’s purpose is to be a fun interactive learning experience that stimulates engagement in science and technology.
The safety of visitors and staff is of paramount importance to Questacon, and we are committed to excellence in Work, Health and Safety (WHS).
Questacon welcomes up to 500,000 people each year to the Centre in Canberra, which is open 364 days each year, and annually reaches more than 80,000 people across Australia through national travelling and educator programs delivered to schools and communities, travelling exhibitions and digital offer. Questacon builds interactive exhibits and offers learning experiences in science and technology.
The opportunity
This is an exciting role working at a fun and dynamic organisation with dedicated staff, young workers, and visitors including families, children and school groups. The WHS work is rewarding, interesting and varied including members of the public, child safety, interactive science exhibitions, building, contractor management, national touring programs, and psychosocial safety.
Questacon is building on strong WHS foundations but wants to take WHS to the next level. You will report to the Questacon Executive Director and be a member of the leadership team and promote excellence in WHS and a culture of continuous improvement. The position will be based at the Questacon Centre, and you will get to know the business and staff, and work with them closely. You will have the ability to come up with practical solutions to problems and improve WHS for staff, visitors and contractors.
You will lead the WHS section, provide WHS advice and lead projects. As Senior Manager, WHS, you will have the ability to work with other safety professionals within the department and collaborate on initiatives, as well as across government, industry and academia, to drive a positive safety culture and the requisite behaviours at all levels of Questacon.

* Demonstrated skills, capability and experience in safety leadership and management within an environment focused on driving a positive safety culture, assessing risks and ensuring data and insights inform decisions.
* Demonstrated experience and understanding in safety and quality processes and extensive knowledge of relevant legislation, policies, practices, and standards.
* Be a leader who sees the big picture, can motivate and organise a team to work through ambiguity to achieve concrete outcomes, is not daunted by complexity and enjoys working in a fast-paced environment.
* Demonstrate sound judgement and risk management skills and expertise.
* Demonstrated high level interpersonal and strong communication skills including the ability to liaise, collaborate and negotiate with a broad cross section of internal and external stakeholders including resolving issues and communicating with technical and non-technical audiences.
* Demonstrated experience in project management and leading teams in complex matters, and the ability to develop and implement policies, conduct investigations, and provide high quality written briefs and reports.
* Relevant tertiary qualifications and/or strong experience relevant to the role are highly desirable.

What you will do
This is a list of primary duties and responsibilities that are typically performed in this role under broad direction from the Questacon Executive Director:
* Building on strong foundations in WHS identify opportunities to take Questacon to the next level in WHS.
* Get to know the business and staff and work with them closely to drive a positive safety culture and the requisite behaviours at all levels.
* Working collaboratively with Questacon senior managers and the WHS Team in the department, promote excellence in WHS in meeting WHS legislation including psychosocial safety and child safety.
* Lead and manage the Questacon WHS section including providing strategic direction, planning, budgeting, and service delivery.
* Provide strong leadership in building WHS capability across the organisation and incorporating governance and risk management strategies.
* Demonstrate behaviours consistent with the APS Code of Conduct and APS Values of being inclusive, strategic, influential, adaptive, accountable, and innovative while leading and supporting others to do the same.
Eligibility
To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, applicants must be Australian citizens.
Prior to commencing, successful applicants will be required to:
* Undergo a ‘Working with Children’ Police Check; and
* Obtain or hold a current registration issued under the Working with Vulnerable People (Background Checking) Act 2011.
Positions require a Baseline security clearance, and successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
