Legal Aid NSW provides legal support in criminal, family, and civil law. We offer advice, help at Court, and with dispute resolution by phone or at our 28 offices.
Legal Aid NSW’s Criminal Law Division is the largest criminal defence practice in Australia. It provides legal information, advice, minor assistance, extended legal assistance, duty services, and representation in criminal courts at each jurisdiction level across the state.
About the Role
As a criminal lawyer, you will play a critical role in the provision of criminal law services to clients of Legal Aid NSW. Your responsibilities include:
1. Provide high quality advice, duty assistance, and casework service to disadvantaged communities;
2. Conduct an effective legal practice;
3. Comply with the Legal Aid Commission Act, policies and guidelines, and undertake all related administrative and case management activities.
About You
You will be a motivated solicitor with experience in criminal law, committed to providing high-quality legal services to disadvantaged and vulnerable clients. You will bring:
* Strong advocacy and case management skills
* Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
* Detail orientation, with the ability to manage a busy workload with accuracy
We may use this recruitment to create a talent pool for ongoing or temporary vacancies we have over the next 18 months at the Orange office only.

The Orange office of Legal Aid is located in downtown Orange. The office is a busy mixed practice including specialist services which provides legal services to vulnerable people in Orange and surrounding towns in the central tablelands, including Bathurst, Lithgow, Cowra, Parkes and Forbes. Orange is a thriving regional centre, home to acclaimed restaurants and wineries, parks and gardens, with quality local music and art scenes, and near quaint heritage villages to explore.
The essential requirements for this role
You must:
1. be admitted or be eligible for admission as a legal practitioner in NSW
2. be able to provide a current NSW Practising Certificate before you start work with us
3. be willing to do a Criminal Record Check and/ or Working with Children Check
4. hold Australian or NZ citizenship, Australian Permanent Residency (for ongoing vacancies) or a valid visa to work in Australia (for temporary vacancies)
5. Hold a valid Driver Licence and the ability to travel to regional areas.
