An exciting opportunity currently exists for an enthusiastic and experienced Medical Laboratory Technician Grade 2 to join our Diagnostic Genomics Laboratory. This is a full-time permanent position.
About Monash Health Pathology Service
The Monash Health Pathology Service operates under the brand name of Monash Pathology and is an integral part of Monash Health. It is the largest provider of Pathology services in the State of Victoria and currently operates 6 laboratories. The largest of these is located at the Monash Medical Centre, Clayton, with additional facilities being located at the Dandenong, Moorabbin, Casey, Victorian Heart Hospital and Wonthaggi Hospital. There are currently 18 collection centers based within the hospital sites and community settings. Services are provided to both the public and private sectors and other laboratory services.
You will be joining Monash Health at an exciting time as we work in partnership with Alfred Health to be the premier shared public pathology service in Victoria. As a member of the Pathology team you will be helping to shape the direction of this vital partnership.
About the Role
Within the Diagnostic Genomics Laboratory, the successful candidate will be placed in the Genentics and Molecular Laboratory area but may also be rotated across other areas such as Cytogenetics and the Thalassaemia and Haemophilia Molecular Reference Laboratory. The Genentics and Molecular Laboratory provides a specialised genetic testing service for both malignant conditions and cancer predisposition disorders. Our genomics team currently offers DNA and RNA next generation sequencing (NGS) for targeted gene panels in solid tumour biology and is in the process of expanding its molecular haematology service and developing germline testing for other disorders and whole exome sequening (WES).
The Medical Laboratory Technician Grade 2 will be expected to primarily perform DNA and RNA extraction from a variety of patient samples, support laboratory operations in the Diagnostic Genomics specimen reception by performing sample registration, managing sendaways, equipment maintenance and monitoring of the genomics email inboxes as well as performing simple genetic testing such as PCR.
About You
You will have excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability and willingness to show initiative and application to the task at hand and to be a team player capable of interacting with a range of health professionals including oncologists, pathologists, genetic councellors, pathology laboratory and administrative staff.
What You Need to Know
You should be able to demonstate excellent communication skills as well as the ability to integrate into a small team environment. previous experience in the application of molecular biology techniques for the diagnosis of genetic disease and a background in a NATA accredited diagnostic laboratory is not essential but desirable. The successful applicant for this position will have at least a Diploma in Science or Applied Science (MLS) or recognised equivalent.
