The key duties of the position include The Role As the Director of History and Heritage, you will be responsible for managing the Directorate of History and Heritage (DH&H) within ADF Headquarters (ADFHQ), guiding APS and Reservists, and providing mentorship to your team. You will deliver high-level history and heritage advice to senior Defence leadership, oversee strategic tasks, set priorities, manage workflows, and coordinate responses to internal and external enquiries. Your role includes managing the Defence Oral History Program (DOHP), ensuring proper governance, interview scheduling, staff supervision, and information security. You will lead the secretariat team supporting the Defence History and Heritage Steering Committee, developing key documentation and implementation plans to achieve Defence's History and Heritage Strategic Plan. Maintaining strong relationships with stakeholders such as OCDF, OVCDF, ADFHQ, the Australian War Memorial, is essential. You will identify policy gaps, ensure best practices, produce high-quality research and reports, and recommend solutions to strategic risks. This role requires exceptional leadership, communication, and strategic thinking skills. About our Team The Directorate of History and Heritage is a small team at the strategic centre of Defence, providing high-quality history and heritage advice and support to senior Defence leaders, including the CDF, SEC, VCDF, and ASSOC SEC. Comprised of APS staff and Reservists, the team manages projects such as the Defence Oral History Program (DOHP), heritage displays, and the development of key documentation including the Defence History and Heritage Strategy, Manual, and Strategic Implementation Plan. The History and Heritage team works closely with internal and external stakeholders, including the Australian War Memorial, to identify policy gaps, the application of best practices, and contributes to the preservation and promotion of Defence history. They collaborate effectively to deliver research, reports, and recommendations that address strategic risks and opportunities, in support of Defence's historical and heritage responsibilities. Our Ideal Candidate The ideal candidate for the role will have extensive experience in museum curation, education and arts administration, policy and governance, and have worked with a wide range of stakeholders to develop strategic level organisational policy and guidance on history and heritage issues, particularly within a Government agency. Excellent communication (written and oral) and stakeholder engagement skills will also be required to support engagement with senior leadership and colleagues across Defence's Groups and Services. An ability to manage a busy workload and priorities accordingly is highly desirable, as is a strong and demonstrated understanding of the strategic environment within which Defence operates.
