Integral to the Garvan are its biobanks which contain tissue and blood samples from consented participants. The Technician is to undertake blood-processing duties to expand the collection of the biobanks.
THE OPPORTUNITY
Reporting to the Histopathology & Biospecimen Manager, the Blood Processing Technician will be responsible for processing blood samples and then preparing the samples for storage and entry of information onto a database, record keeping and the ordering of supplies and adherence to occupational health and safety guidelines. In addition to this, performing general histology duties will also be a part of the responsibilities of the incumbent. This role is 5 days on site.
Salary: $58,000 + 11.5% super + salary packaging
Employment Type: 1 year term contract with possibility for extension

WHAT YOU WILL DO
The key responsibilities include:
* Processing of blood samples collected as part of the biobanks
* Strict adherence to Study Protocols
* The meticulous preparation and labelling of the blood samples
* Centrifuge handling and maintenance
* Aliquoting and snap freezing of samples
* Data entry and ensuring its accuracy onto a database
* Maintaining, auditing and implementing changes to electronic databases
* Assistance with specific projects
* Performing general histology
* All general lab duties
* Contributing to the writing of standard operating procedures and other manuals
* Record Keeping
* Assisting other Garvan facilities/labs if required
* Working closely and effectively with small teams, planning and prioritising work to meet all commitments.
ABOUT YOU
* TAFE or university degree in science, applied science, health or a health related discipline
* Excellent computer and communication skills
* Strong attention to detail with excellent data entry skills
* Ability to carry out duties under supervision and also autonomously
* Ability to work as a team member
* Understanding of good laboratory practice guidelines
