Our Continuing Story
More than a century on, our Memorial is the centre of national commemoration for Australia’s
involvement in conflict, telling the stories of Australia’s servicemen and servicewomen and their
experiences in war – and more recently in peacekeeping and humanitarian operations. However,
the stories of the 100,000 Australian veterans who have served in the past three decades remain
mostly untold.
Through the modernisation and expansion of our galleries and buildings we will tell the continuing
story of Australia’s contemporary contribution to a better world. In doing so, we will connect the spirit
of our past, present and future for generations to come.
Our plans will allow us, for the first time, to create a permanent display dedicated to the stories of
our nation’s recent service and Australia’s efforts to prevent war and contribute to peace.

Job Description
The Payroll Manager is responsible for the delivery of responsive, client centred payroll and related
services to employees and contractors to meet the Memorial's internal requirements and statutory
obligations. As a payroll system expert, you will lead a small team under the broad guidance of the
Head Human Resources with responsibility for supervision of two payroll staff. You will be
committed to partnering with business, cultivating a high performance culture, and working
independently and flexibly.
Responsibilities:
Functions as payroll system expert ensuring data and system integrity, execution of quality related
controls, and investigation and resolution of system issues.
Aggregation and analysis of salary; leave and superannuation matters.
Preparation and maintenance of procedure manuals and process checklists to ensure the quality and
transparency of payroll transaction processing.
Provision of regular management reports to the Executive, Corporate Management Group, line
managers in business areas, and a range of external government agencies, as well as other inputs to
support business planning, reporting and risk management.
Management of performance, resources and processes within the team, working to ensure continuous
improvement and enable others' learning and engagement.
Maintain a very good working knowledge of the Memorial’s Teamwork (enterprise) Agreement, payroll
and financial processes and be readily available to explain them clearly to Memorial staff.
Provide advice to managers and staff on routine and complex payroll and leave matters.
Keep up to date with changes to payroll, taxation, and employment policies and legislation.
Representation of the immediate work area in a range of forums with internal and external stakeholders.
Selection Criteria:
1. Demonstrated payroll system expertise in delivering a range of payroll and reporting services preferably
within the APS environment. Experience with Aurion is not essential, but preferred.
2. Demonstrated initiative when managing payroll and reporting issues, and complex payroll projects.
3. Demonstrated ability to successfully function and deliver against tight deadlines in a fast paced,
demanding payroll and reporting environment requiring high accuracy and attention to detail
4. Demonstrated ability to manage, mentor and coach payroll team members.
5. Communicate clearly both orally and in writing, with the ability to think and respond quickly and
professionally on complex, controversial or sensitive issues.

This includes interactions with visitors and veterans, taking oral histories, viewing/listening to oral histories,
photos, film, sound, artworks, online material, and objects or documents that describe or depict warfare,
