SWS is an established leader in Tasmania's waste sector, operating the State's largest, most modern waste management facility network. 04th March, 2025
Southern Waste Solutions (SWS) is the business and trading arm of the Copping Refuse Disposal Site Joint Authority. It aims to provide best-practice, environmentally-sound integrated waste management and resource recovery solutions to meet increasing compliance obligations, diversion from landfill targets and community expectations.
SWS is focussed on growth and has an ambitious long-term strategy to optimise its key strengths for the benefit of the broader Tasmanian community. It has evolved from a landfill operator to a mature integrated waste business with a solid foundation from which to invest in emerging opportunities in the waste and resource recovery sector, particularly guided by the Tasmanian Government’s Waste Strategy and Action Plan.
Reporting directly to the Chief Executive Officer, the Chief Operating Officer will play a pivotal role as part of the senior leadership team in leading and operating an innovative and safe waste management business in southern Tasmania, ensuring that it is financially and environmentally sustainable into the future.
The Chief Operating Officer will contribute to the development and execution of strategy and best practice operations management across multiple sites. The role will manage and lead SWS operations and operational employees across all facilities including the Lutana waste and resource recovery centre and Copping Landfill. In addition, the role will see the implementation of resource recovery operations at Lutana, the introduction of Organics Processing at Copping and be the driver of innovative change across the business to develop the SWS resource recovery business, to drive waste diversion with our Local Government partners and owners, and be the change maker for the industry.
The successful applicant will be an authentic leader with demonstrated success and capability in a similar senior operational management role. Previous experience managing and delivering infrastructure projects combined with a sound knowledge of asset management and risk management principles will be critical to your success in this role. Excellent people management skills and proven experience developing high performing teams is also required, together with the ability to build collaborative relationships with customers and key stakeholders to provide best practice environmental outcomes. Experience in the waste management sector would be favourable.
This is a unique opportunity for an individual with a passion for the waste management sector to assist with strategically positioning SWS to take full advantage of the exciting opportunities ahead in this rapidly evolving sector.
