The Engineering Manager, Software Engineering, is a seasoned hands-on leader who is passionate about both tech and people and managing engineering teams within a matrix structure, typically comprising 5–15 engineers. This role is pivotal in defining team objectives, implementing the best engineering practices, and aligning solutions with Chapter Area and Tribe Quarterly Business Review (QBR) strategic objectives. Key responsibilities include developing strategies to attract and retain top talent, improving the engineering vision for internal customers, and ensuring the delivery of solutions that adhere to established principles and practices. The manager also coordinates recruitment, performance assessments, people allocation, and team growth through learning and development opportunities.
Proficiency in Agile Ways of Working is critical, along with strong business partner management and communication skills. The Engineering Manager serves as a bridge between engineers, customers, and stakeholders, driving strategic solutions that optimize systems, improve operations, and contribute to growth.
Your day in the life of an Engineering Manager, Software Engineering at Optus
Guide and support chapter members’ growth across tribes through mentorship, technical leadership, and career development.
Uphold and contribute to engineering standards and practices while ensuring compliance with company and regulatory guidelines.
Maintain domain knowledge and technical capability to ensure business continuity and provide solutions across multiple squads.
Stay informed about the infrastructure, architecture and codebase. Engage in technical discussions and, where necessary, get on the tools to stay up to date.
Conduct regular 1:1s and oversee the completion of performance reviews, offering clear feedback and opportunities for professional development.
Build positive relationships with tribes, squads, and stakeholders, demonstrating critical thinking and empathy to achieve well-engineered outcomes.
Collaborate with tribes and leadership to define QBR strategies, track OKRs, and align sourcing strategies with organizational goals.
Lead hiring, recruitment, and performance reviews, encouraging engagement, passion, and knowledge-sharing within the chapter.
Promote innovation, creativity, and a diverse, inclusive environment aligned with Optus' values, driving continuous improvement and excellence.
Your skills to pay the bills
Formal qualifications in Computer Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Information Systems, or equivalent training/experience, with certifications in web or integration languages and technical leadership.
8+ years of proven experience, including 2+ years in leadership roles, 5+ years in web application or full-stack development, and prior experience in telecommunications with expertise in web tools and integration capabilities.
Strong technical background, with experience in building and running scalable backend systems. Familiarity with Agile methodologies and modern software development practices is essential.
Proficient in analytical, creative, and critical thinking skills, with experience managing teams on sophisticated product solutions, capability development projects, and solution architecture for web and digital platforms.
Strong understanding of IT risk management, information security fundamentals, DevOps practices, Agile methodologies, and data privacy requirements, alongside hands-on expertise in web and integration tools and languages (e.g., React, Java, Python, etc).
Experience with vendor tools, and demonstrating cloud technologies to drive innovation and security in digital solutions.
Demonstrated strong leadership and a focus on customer-centric solutions, achieving outcomes through negotiation and engaging with customers.
Proficient in vendor/contract management, encouraging collaborative relationships, and influencing outcomes across diverse teams, while serving as an Agile ambassador driving cultural change.
Exceptional communication skills, including experience engaging with VP-level executives, and the ability to perform effectively under pressure in high-stakes environments.
