Bondi Surf Bathers’ Life Saving Club (BSBLSC) is recognised by Surf Life Saving Australia as the first Surf Lifesaving Club in Australia and the oldest active Surf Lifesaving Club in the world. An Australian icon, BSBLSC holds a special place in the nation’s history. We are currently seeking an efficient and enthusiastic on-site Caretaker to join our team and help ensure the smooth running and safety of our Clubhouse and community.
Role Summary
The Caretaker role is integral to the daily operations and success of BSBLSC. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining the Clubhouse, ensuring its security, and supporting event management. This is an extraordinary opportunity to live and work in the heart of Bondi, contributing to the legacy of our beachside community. Preference will be given to current or immediate past patrolling members.

The responsibilities fall broadly under being inclusive and living the Club’s values, ensuring the safety and well-being of our members and guests, and maintaining our heritage building.
Primary Responsibilities
* Conduct daily inspections of all areas of the Clubhouse.
* Maintain cleanliness and safety in all public areas, including halls, toilets, kitchen, patrol room, gym and surrounding grounds.
* Maintain the cleanliness and upkeep of the caretaker’s residence.
* Perform minor repairs and general maintenance; arrange for professional tradespeople as necessary.
* Ensure security protocols, including lock-up procedures, are followed.
* Monitor and manage member and guest access to the Clubhouse, reporting any issues.
* Maintain an on-site presence for all events occurring after 6 : 00pm or arrange an approved substitute.
* Manage inventory of commonly used items such as cleaning supplies and consumables.
* Liaise with contractors and oversee outsourced maintenance services.
* Identify and notify the Operations Manager and Facilities Manager when urgent and non urgent maintenance is required
* Identify and notify the Operations Manager and Facilities Manager of urgent and non urgent workplace health and safety issues.
* Submit a monthly facilities report to the Operations Manager.
* Obtain approval for expenditures per BSBLSC policies.
* Ensure any transactions are electronic, with receipts provided for all expenses.
* Notify the police and the Operations Manager in case of a security breach.
Key Requirements
* Past or present involvement in a voluntary organisation, preferably as a current or immediate past patrolling member of BSBLSC or other SLSC.
* Demonstrated ability to problem-solve and take initiative.
* Excellent communication and people skills, including conflict resolution abilities.
* Strong sense of responsibility and diligence.
* Practical skills such as cleaning, minor repairs, and efficient work delivery.
* Ability to maintain an on-site presence, arranging for approved coverage when on leave.
* Current Working with Children Check (WWCC) and Police Check.
Term & Conditions
* Tenure : Initial six-month trial period, followed by an 18-month term, with potential for a 12-month extension based on performance. Annual performance reviews will be conducted.
* Contractor Status : The Caretaker will operate as an independent contractor (ABN required) and is not an employee of the Club. A lease agreement will be signed for the caretaker’s residence within the Clubhouse.
* Accommodation : On-site studio with a private bathroom, shared shower facilities, kitchenette, parking, internet, and gym access.
* Workload : Approximately 15-20 hours per week, varying based on Club seasons and event schedules.
* Remuneration : This is not a paid role; accommodation is provided in lieu of remuneration.
* Reporting To : BSBLSC Operations Manager, with escalation to the Board of Management as needed.
