What you'll be doing The Help2WIN Youth Peer Youth Worker (YPSW) will provide person centred, recovery-oriented and trauma-informed peer support. As an integral member of the of the Help 2WIN team, the YPSW will provide a rapid respond to young people aged 12 – 17 years who present to Emergency in acute crisis with mental distress and/or psychosocial complexity. They will provide assertive, mobile outreach support to young people and operate within all stages of the SCH Help 2WIN Pathway. The support they provide will be timely and appropriate in a place where young people live or feel comfortable. Alongside the Youth Peer Support Worker the Help 2WIN team includes; a Social Worker, Aboriginal Health Worker, Clinical Psychologist, Psychiatry Registrar and other Mental Health Clinicians. The Youth Peer Worker will deliver support that aligns with the values of Peer Support and the principles of step up/step down care. This includes making connections to a range of community-based services (step down), or supporting consumers to determine if they require more assertive acute care. The Peer Worker will take a collaborative approach to support young people identify and connect with the level of support they need and want. The YPSW provides direct peer support to people at risk of suicide presenting to the service. They use lived experience of suicidal crisis and/or attempt to facilitate hope, promote social connection, and reduce isolation and loneliness. The YPSW plans, designs and delivers youth peer support interventions within a recovery framework. As a multi-disciplinary team member they utilise lived experience to facilitate hope through appropriate disclosure of personal experiences and role-modelling recovery. They build relationships that maintain a trauma informed consumer focus. They support young people to identify their need for ongoing support beyond the scope of CHW and connect them to relevant services in the community that can address the cause of their distress. The Youth Peer Support worker will draw on their lived experience of mental distress, suicidal crises and uses this experience to engage with consumers, provide input into policy and contribute to processes that improve the experiences of mental health consumers. They will seek feedback to enhance service delivery and optimise outcomes. They will advocate for consumer’s wishes and goals as part of the multidisciplinary team. The Youth Peer Workers is required to work from and liaise with the Emergency Department at Westmead to ensure young people in distress are successfully linked to the Help 2WIN service and that staff have a high awareness of the service. Personal lived experience of mental distress, suicidal crisis and/or attempt with recovery, and the ability to purposefully use this lived experience to provide peer support to young people at risk of suicide. Certificate IV in Mental Health Peer Work (consumer) or willingness to obtain this qualification within 12 months of commencing position, including completion of CHCCCS003 Increase the safety of individuals at risk of suicide, and willingness to complete other essential training as soon as practical. A degree in a relevant field is required for payment at Graduate rate. Commitment to using person centred, recovery-oriented and trauma-informed principles to provide support to young people at risk of suicide. Understanding of, and commitment to, the use of lived experience in service design, implementation and evaluation. Excellent interpersonal skills to work with clinicians from diverse backgrounds and form relationships with a wide range of mental health consumers. Good verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated competency in Microsoft applications. Class 1A drivers licence.
