Located at Sydney’s Iconic - Taronga Zoo 4 Year Horticulturist Apprentice position - Certificate III Parks and Gardens Early 2025 start date Taronga Zoo Sydney is looking for a motivated and willing to learn Apprentice Horticulturist to join the team, starting in 2025 This is a fantastic opportunity for a school leaver, or adult apprentice, wanting to enter the Trades industry and complete their apprenticeship. This role is totally unique; you’ll be working in the zoo grounds Sometimes on animal exhibit facilities such as meercats, chimps, gorillas, tigers so much more Taronga will support 1 paid day per week where you will complete your trade studies at TAFE. About the Role… The apprentice horticulturist will be trained in providing services for the presentation of animal habitats and general facilities, maintenance of bush land area using bush regeneration and revegetation techniques, tree health and essential animal food collection service for the exhibited collection, under the general supervision of a Horticulture Supervisor. The Apprentice is required to attend TAFE training per week as part of the standard working week. Key Accountabilities… Undertake the full four-year term of a horticultural apprenticeship and complete on the job training requirements with Taronga; meet all required competency standards as determined by the Registered Training Organisation; and obtain a Certificate III Parks and Gardens qualification. Receive training in all aspects of Work Health and Safety policies and procedures, and complete duties within the safety standards. Gain on the job training and experience in zoological horticultural operations, in accordance with the Taronga’s policies and procedures. Ensure the safe handling and custody of Taronga’s assets, including monitoring equipment for maintenance purposes, reporting faulty equipment, and ensuring safe use, and storage. Work effectively as a member of a high performing team, to assist Taronga in its achievement of strategic outcomes. Comply with and suggest sustainability practices in the workplace to help achieve Taronga’s sustainability targets and reduce environmental impact. About You… We are looking for a candidate that has: Completion of compulsory secondary education. Must be Eligible to enrol in the relevant TAFE trade course The ideal candidate must be physically fit and capable of completing the physical elements of the role Hold or eligible to hold a current NSW Drivers License or ability to have existing license formally recognised (if over relevant age) Obtain and maintain a current paid NSW Working with Children Check at own expense.
