About QByte Studios
QByte Studios is an independent game development studio based in Victoria, Australia. We're currently working on Nanites, a third-person action-builder survival game inspired by Fortnite: Save the World, Lethal Company, and Days Gone .
Set in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by deadly nanotechnology, Nanites blends immersive storytelling, intense action, and strategic survival gameplay. We're a passionate team dedicated to delivering high-quality experiences while fostering a collaborative and fun culture.
Role Overview We're looking for a skilled Unreal Engine 5 Programmer to help develop and refine gameplay mechanics, AI, and networking systems for Nanites. You'll collaborate closely with designers, artists, and other developers to ensure smooth, optimized, and engaging gameplay.
As a contractor, you'll have the flexibility to contribute as much or as little as your schedule allows, with no mandatory hours. You'll also be fully remote, so you can work from anywhere.
What You'll Be Doing Developing and implementing core gameplay systems in Unreal Engine 5 using C++ and Blueprint. Optimizing performance for PC and potential console platforms. Collaborating with designers to create smooth and responsive player mechanics. Working on AI behaviors, procedural generation, and networked multiplayer functionality. Debugging and refining systems to ensure stability and a high-quality experience. Participating in team discussions and providing technical insights. What We're Looking For Proficiency in Unreal Engine 5 and strong experience with C++ and Blueprints. Solid understanding of gameplay programming, AI, and networking in Unreal Engine. Experience with multiplayer networking (Steam, EOS, or similar peer-to-peer setups). Knowledge of optimization techniques for better performance. Strong communication and problem-solving skills. Comfortable signing a contractor agreement (legal stuff, you know how it is). Industry Transparency We recognize concerns about unpaid work in the game industry, and we take them seriously. To ensure fairness and legal clarity:
All contributors are independent contractors. We use the term "contributor" because it sounds better, but legally, everyone is a contractor. We currently do not generate revenue. However, if QByte Studios does, contributors will be compensated based on the net revenue-sharing model outlined in our agreements. Additional Notes Applicants aged 14-17 will need a signed parental consent form. This is a contractor role, not a traditional job; work as much or as little as you want. While this is an unpaid position for now, we fully intend to compensate all contributors if the studio generates revenue. Bonus Points (Not Required, but Nice to Have): Experience with Unreal Engine's Gameplay Ability System (GAS). Familiarity with peer-to-peer networking solutions. Love for post-apocalyptic or sci-fi themes. Knowledge of Fortnite: Save the World or similar gameplay styles. Forget Boring Interviews – We Play Games Instead! We hate the usual email/call interviews. They're awkward, stiff, and don't show us how you work in a team.
So, inspired by Nicholas Greenwood, we've decided that interviews at QByte Studios are done in-game ! Most likely in Fortnite Battle Royale and/or Save the World, but the game may vary.
You don't need to be cracked at the game—we just want to see how you:
Work in a team (if you're a lone wolf, this might not be for you). Handle pressure (aka, getting third-partied by a 12-year-old with better aim than us). Adapt and learn (aka, are you gonna rage quit if things go south?). Communicate (even if half of it is playful trash talk, as long as you respect people). If a 1v1 happens, trash talk is totally allowed (may earn you bonus points), just keep it fun and respectful.
