PhD Scholarship
The candidate will work with Professor Amy Maguire, ARC Industry Fellow, and the Australian Human Rights Commission to investigate how a participation duty could enhance Australia's human rights framework.
This PhD opportunity is funded by an Australian Research Council Industry Fellowship titled "How can Australia deliver its commitments to human rights reform? A research-policy alliance."
The fellowship is led by Associate Professor Amy Maguire from the University of Newcastle School of Law and Justice, in partnership with the Australian Human Rights Commission.
The proposed national Human Rights Act would include a participation duty for public authorities, requiring effective participation of specific groups including First Nations peoples, children and young people, and individuals with disability in decision-making processes that affect them.
This PhD project complements the fellowship by building knowledge on effective human rights law reform and implementation in Australia.
The candidate will evaluate pathways to actualising a participation duty in Australian human rights law through doctrinal, comparative, and qualitative research.
This study will develop the candidate's expertise in international and Australian human rights law, law reform, and the connections between research and policy-making.
The candidate will collaborate with the Australian Human Rights Commission on an industry-engaged PhD project offering excellent skill development and policy translation potential.
