We work together as a supportive and cohesive team that shares ideas and provides avenues for those with the appetite to take on new responsibilities and become leaders in their field.The role of Principal PlannerAs Principal Planner, you will play a pivotal role in directing and overseeing large-scale urban development, design, and planning initiatives throughout the government, institutional, business, and commercial sectors. You will be integral in shaping and strengthening Hames Sharley’s reputation through business development, project leadership, team mentorship and budget oversight.Your responsibilities will includeLead and manage multiple urban development projects from inception to completion, ensuring project plans, timelines, and budgets are met. Oversee project financials and profitability while maintaining rigorous quality standards.Provide guidance, support, and mentorship to planners, urban designers, and other team members. Foster a collaborative and high-performing environment that promotes knowledge sharing and professional growth.Provide expert advice and direction in the preparation of planning and policy documents, guiding project teams to produce high-quality deliverables (reports, proposals, graphics, and imagery).Identify and pursue new business opportunities, cultivate client relationships and proactively participate in industry networking events.Lead the preparation and review of expressions of interest, submissions, proposals, and tenders, ensuring compelling content and strategic alignment with client needs.Champion the Hames Sharley brand at key industry forums and events, actively promoting our design and planning capabilities.Establish and maintain strong client relationships, ensuring clear communication of project objectives, progress, and outcomes. Act as the primary point of contact for stakeholder management and negotiations.Maintain a thorough understanding of relevant legislation, schemes, strategies, plans, and policies. Incorporate best practices in urban design and planning, adhering to the WA planning framework and other jurisdictions as necessary.Keep abreast of emerging trends, tools, and techniques. Encourage team participation in seminars, courses, and professional events, promoting ongoing learning and excellence.To be successful in this role, you should have the below skillsetAn accredited tertiary degree in Urban and Regional Planning, or an approved relevant equivalent.Proven ability to lead teams in a studio environment, aligning with Hames Sharley’s values and fostering a positive, collaborative atmosphere.Exceptional communication skills to build positive and supportive relationships with clients, colleagues, and the wider urban planning community.Advanced proficiency in research, data gathering, and context analysis to deliver concise, high-quality, and accurate reports, presentations, and plans.Comprehensive understanding of the WA planning framework (applicable interstate frameworks would be an advantage, but not necessary), with the capacity to interpret and apply legislation, strategies and policies effectively.Demonstrated experience managing project scopes, timelines, and budgets at a senior or principal level, ensuring successful and profitable outcomes.At Hames Sharley, we place significant emphasis on fostering a healthy balance between professional responsibilities and personal well-being.
