Our services are in high demand nationally and continue to grow on the back of new and exciting projects, including within the renewable energy, infrastructure, and resource sectors. To support our ongoing growth, we are seeking a Senior and Principal Ecologist or Botanist based in our Perth office. You will be a part of a leading team with extensive experience within Western Australia (over 20 years). The WA Ecology team prides itself on providing high quality botanical surveys and deliverables to a range of clients throughout the state, with interesting work opportunities and team cohesiveness.
Principal Ecologist (Botanist)
As Principal Ecologist (Botanist), you will play a key role in further developing Umwelt’s profile for ecological projects across Western Australia - including identifying, winning, leading, managing, and completing a wide range of ecological projects, and taking ownership of all aspects of project delivery to provide a fully integrated outcome in a manner that maintains and enhances Umwelt’s reputation. You will have a strong business development function leveraging from Umwelt’s strong ecology reputation and from your existing relationships and ability to form strong and lasting relationships with clients.
About you
We are looking for a Principal Ecologist who has the following:
* Tertiary qualifications in a relevant field (Botany or related biological sciences) with 10+ years’ relevant experience.
* Substantial ecological experience in one or multiple of the following sectors: infrastructure, defence, resources and extractive industry, or commercial development.
* Considerable consulting experience and/or a combination of consulting and client/regulator side ecology experience.
* Demonstrated experience as lead consultant for the application of relevant Western Australian biodiversity survey and assessment requirements.
* Experience leading ecology surveys, assessments, and reporting.
* Ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with a range of stakeholders including peers, clients, and government agencies.
* Ability to work in a professional team as well as autonomously.
* Highly motivated with a strong team commitment.
* Willingness to support the development and implementation of the growth strategy for the ecology workstream in Western Australia.
* Ability to prepare successful large tender/proposal documents.
Senior Ecologist (Botanist)
Our ideal candidate would have previous experience as an ecological consultant within Western Australia and is motivated to develop their technical skills on a number of exciting projects throughout the State.
You will work closely with our WA Ecology Manager and relevant Seniors and Principals to deliver quality project outcomes. This role will be involved in a large range of field surveys and not limited to one specific location. The successful candidate will be a part of a leading team with extensive experience within Western Australia (over 20 years). The successful applicant has prior botanical experience, enjoys field survey work, strives for technical excellence, and will be focused on delivering high quality project outcomes.
About you
We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic Senior Ecologist with 5+ years of experience who has:
* A degree/post-graduate qualification in environmental science, botany, zoology, environmental science (or similar).
* 5+ years’ experience as an Ecologist or Botanist. Prior consulting experience highly regarded.
* Demonstrated experience in planning, coordinating, and undertaking terrestrial flora surveys, with a focus in Western Australia. Previous experience in undertaking fauna surveys in Western Australia also highly regarded.
* Prior experience and knowledge of Western Australian State and Commonwealth environmental legislation.
* Demonstrated experience in project managing botanical survey projects, development and/or biodiversity offsetting projects will be highly regarded.
* An ability to develop and maintain positive relationships with a range of stakeholders including clients, government agencies and fellow team members.
* Demonstrated experience in the collection and interpretation of ecological and spatial data.
* Strong verbal and written communication skills including experience in preparing and reviewing reports. Willingness to take responsibility for delivery of reports to final quality.
* A high level of motivation and self-direction.
* Be willing to work flexible hours and travel for work including working away from home to complete ecological surveys in remote locations.
