About the Opportunity We have an established Radioactive Waste Disposal business that plays a world-leading role in scientific, conceptual engineering and safety case development work underpinning the future management and disposal of radioactive waste, spent nuclear fuels and nuclear materials. We support key clients in the UK and overseas across the nuclear industry. We are recruiting Modelling Consultants for our Radioactive Waste Disposal business to work on a diverse range of projects that underpin the safety of future geological disposal facilities (GDF), as well as near-surface storage and disposal facilities. These projects are likely to involve: Modelling of physical processes, including thermal, chemical, and mechanical, using established software toolkits or finite element models Coupled modelling of physical processes Hydrogeological modelling with our proprietary 3D finite-element modelling software, ConnectFlow Probabilistic modelling (e.g. for high-level performance assessment of facilities) Maintenance and development of modelling software Key responsibilities: You will be involved in delivering a diverse range of desk-based consultancy projects undertaken for our clients. Key aspects of the role are listed below: Providing input to a range of technical and modelling areas from conceptual model development, through data analysis, model set up and execution, to results analysis and interpretation, as well as broader consultancy. Producing concise and well-written technical reports and presentation of results to clients. Developing an understanding of the underlying requirements of our clients, and how we can meet those requirements. The role offers the opportunity to apply your skills to solving real-world problems for our clients. You will join a friendly, highly collaborative, multi-disciplinary team (including mathematicians, physicists, chemists, geologists and engineers). Here's what you'll need : A degree (or equivalent) in a physical science, mathematics, computer science, or engineering Experience of mathematical modelling Ability to work on several varied projects concurrently, managing time and priorities appropriately Ability to collaborate effectively in a multi-disciplinary team Technically able, with a demonstrable track record of creative problem solving and attention to detail Good written and verbal communication skills It would be advantageous but not essential to have one of more of the following: A Postgraduate degree in a physical science, mathematics, computer science or engineering Experience of scientific programming Experience applying numerical methods Experience of scripting (in Python or other languages) for data manipulation/processing Experience of data analysis and interpretation Experience of using 3D finite-element modelling software Experience of developing and maintaining databases Familiarity with Linux operating systems Knowledge of key physical processes, such as: hydrogeology gas migration and multi-phase flow thermal chemical mechanical Experience of modelling coupled processes Knowledge of the nuclear disposal sector Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including tailoring outputs to the requirements of different stakeholders Our Culture: Our values stand on a foundation of safety, integrity, inclusion and diversity.
