This position will work closely with colleagues across the Water business to facilitate the delivery of company objectives. Responsibilities include managing the daily needs of the Scoresby laboratories, including safety, training, equipment supply and maintenance, logistics and inventory management. With a focus on operational excellence and customer satisfaction, the Laboratory Manager ensures that the laboratory maintains high standards in both technical and administrative functions. Key qualifications include a science-related degree (preferably Chemistry or Microbiology), extensive years of laboratory experience with at least 5 years in a management/supervisory role and success in managing laboratory teams, and strong communication and problem-solving skills.The day to dayThe Laboratory Manager is responsible for: Maintaining and expanding high quality relationships with new and existing customers ensuring an industry presence and partnering.Client contract service delivery KPI's are met and exceeded.Ensure financial performance management is in line with budgetary expectations with full P & L responsibility.Create value through technical leadership, industry knowledge, automation & innovation.Develop a technical leadership position through proactive R & D & investment in high end services.Maintaining the level of safety across the business including facilitating and participating in regular safety audits.Optimise multi-skilling, cross-training and sharing of staff to maximise productivity, business performance and staff career development.Lead, motivate, communicate and manage staff to ensure Core Strategies and Strategy Map Goals are met.Activate participation with industry (client and events) presenting on innovations, trends and emerging concerns.Providing 100% compliance for communication of exceedance notifications.Evaluate and control productivity and profitability via monitoring and achieving set Balanced Scorecard metric and budget targets - $/FTE, % TEC, % ROS, % Variable Expenses.Preparing, in consultation with the Business Manager, the annual operating budget and Balanced Scorecard.The Essentials:The successful applicant will possess the following skills and abilities:Tertiary qualifications in science preferably Chemistry or Microbiology.10 years demonstrated laboratory experience with preferably 5 years in a management role.Excellent written and verbal communication skills.A strong customer focus.An understanding of basic business principles.An understanding of financial reporting (e.g. P & L).A determined focus to maintain a safe workplace for all staff.Build cohesive relationships.Woking at ALSOur people drive our success at ALS.We are a diverse and dedicated community united by our passion to make a difference in the world.
