Job Description
The Presentation team creates award-winning visual stories, illustrations, and infographics for The Age, Sydney Morning Herald, Brisbane Times, and WAToday.
We work alongside the country’s best journalists, photographers, video producers, and editors to produce industry-leading visual content that informs and engages our audience.
We’re looking for a Senior Digital Graphic Designer to join the team and help elevate the visual treatment of our stories, including our marquee investigations and exclusives.
Responsibilities
Day to day you will:
1. Work alongside journalists and editors on visual content for news and features
2. Create digital artwork and infographics
3. Be audience-centric - put our audience experience first and foremost
4. Identify potential for visual stories and generate original ideas
5. Work quickly and accurately to ensure deadlines are met
6. Be a supportive member of the team, providing assistance and advice to others when applicable.
Qualifications
This is not an entry-level position. Please only apply if you have a solid folio of digital work and have several years of experience. People with newsroom experience will go straight to the top of the list; however, we welcome applications from experienced designers from other fields.
What we would like to see:
1. Experience and passion for visual storytelling
2. Experience creating infographics
3. Experience with HTML/CSS
4. Strong practical skills with Photoshop, Illustrator, Figma, or Sketch
5. Strong interest in news and current affairs
6. Ability to work to a brief and a tight deadline
7. Comfortable wrangling a bit of data
Nice to have:
1. Illustration skills
2. Animation skills
3. Knowledge of mapping software
4. Understanding of UI design and usability
5. Front-end development skills - React, but any JavaScript experience would be highly regarded.
