The Movement & Safety team works in partnership with stakeholders and communities located across Barwon South-West Grampians Region.
We explore, develop and deliver solutions to move people and goods efficiently and safely while being sensitive to the needs and importance of enhancing key destinations and places across Victoria.
We do this by:
Responding to operational and safety matters across the transport network.Collaborating with key internal and external road safety and transport partners tasked with investigating and identifying opportunities to address short, medium and long-term needs for all transport modes.
This includes managing issues related to congestion, speed limits, road safety, freight and amenity, pedestrians and cyclists, and contributing to changes that seek to meet the demand of current and emerging transport safety and movement challenges.Using knowledge of the operation of the network and influencing teams and projects to address such issues through design reviews and business case development.Investigating circumstances surrounding fatal collisions and identifying mitigating measures where possible while applying Safe System thinking.Working with our transport partners (including Councils) to explore network problems and develop solutions.As a Senior Movement and Safety Engineer, your key priorities include:
Managing a small team in accordance with business area planning activities including financial management and resource management activities.Applying traffic engineering knowledge and developing solutions, recommendations and responses to road safety and traffic management issues and influencing transport project outcomes.Providing timely and sound traffic engineering advice to the community and a range of stakeholders.Applying engineering and safe system competence to investigate road crashes in accordance with DTP's policies and procedures in the fatal crash report system.Assisting other team members in the development/delivery of safety treatments.Key Selection Criteria The Department of Transport and Planning is seeking a Senior Movement and Safety Engineer to lead and improve engineering solutions for complex multimodal transport systems.
This role involves applying advanced technical knowledge and best practices to design and deliver engineering activities that enhance the safety and efficiency of transport networks.
You will assess outcomes and impacts, taking a holistic view of the system to ensure goods, services, and people move safely.
The successful candidate will build and maintain partnerships, driving co-creation and team collaboration.
You will facilitate discussions, navigate differing opinions, and ensure timely, quality delivery of results.
Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are key to identifying recurring issues, developing solutions, and delivering effective outcomes.
A strong understanding of political and organisational contexts is essential for influencing decisions and ensuring actions align with values, legal obligations, and organisational priorities.
You will also leverage your interpersonal skills to build relationships at senior levels, creating a collaborative work culture across teams and departments.

Qualifications and Experience Mandatory Bachelor's degree and extensive experience in a relevant Engineering discipline.

Road Safety accreditation course(s) and understanding of Safe System practices.
