About Us
The Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Legal Service (ATSILS) is a not-for-profit, community-based organisation that delivers innovative, professional criminal, civil and family law services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients throughout Queensland.
We are 50 years old, with over 300 staff members, including a specialist Through Care service to complement our legal services. Our work is fully government funded, and this role is tied to ongoing funding.
Opportunity
This role offers frequent opportunities to provide expert casework assistance and information directly to clients, as well as external stakeholders about client matters. You will have the support of State-wide resources, including the Principal Legal Officer and Directors of Law (Family and Civil).
The development of culturally competent legal services is inherent in this role, allowing you to achieve confidence in this specialist area.
Selection Criteria
Essential Criteria (6)
* Values Alignment: Demonstrated alignment to ATSILS values and vision, with an appreciation of and sensitivity to the challenges faced by our clients.
* Qualifications: Admission as a Legal Practitioner within the State of Queensland or holder of a current Practising Certificate, with eligibility for immediate admission to the Supreme Court of Queensland and the Australian High Court.
* Client Service and File Management: Sound interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to empathetically convey sound information or advice, and present written information and casework statistical reports.
* Core Legal Duties: Experience in high-level client services in Family and Civil Law proceedings, including casework relating to Child Protection, Domestic Violence Applications, and Civil Litigation generally.
* Confidence in and Knowledge of Legislation: An in-depth working knowledge of key legislation, practices, and procedures in Family Law and Civil proceedings.
* Access, Teamwork, and Communication: Preparedness to work after hours if necessary, and willingness to assist in the development of Court Support/Field Officers' and other legal staff members' training/education.
Desirable Criteria (4)
* Microsoft Office Proficiency: Ability to use Microsoft Office in a Windows networked environment.
* Mobility, Access, and Safety: A current Queensland Driver Licence and ability to drive in all reasonable conditions may be required, dependent on location. Additionally, a willingness to undergo a Criminal Record Check to achieve a National Police Certificate.
* Minimum Two Years Post-Admission Experience: Ideal, but graduates with significant comprehension of relevant legislation and employment experience may be afforded an interview.
* Criminal Law Expertise: Ability to assist the Regional Manager on duty lawyer matters during periods of demand is highly regarded.
The preferred candidate must be prepared to consent to a criminal history check being conducted, if requested.
