The University of Sydney Veterinary Teaching Hospital is looking for a new colleague to work in a growing team supporting the University Veterinary Teaching Hospital and guiding the development of Doctor of Veterinary Medicine students. This role does not require previous academic experience but rather a strong clinical background and interest in supporting student development.
About the opportunity
This is a clinically focused position with a focus on clinical service and teaching joining the team of small animal surgeons that make up the surgical referral service at the University Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Sydney (UVTHS). Most time will be spent performing specialist-level surgeries and providing clinical training of undergraduate and postgraduate students at UVTHS including residents, surgical interns, and veterinary students. This role will provide clinical services to clients of the hospital and will train, supervise and assess students during rotations and play a role in the surgery resident training program. There is also a contribution to surgery skills training in the DVM program.
Within the Sydney School of Veterinary Sciences, the University Veterinary Teaching Hospital, Sydney (UVTHS) has a range of small animal veterinary science disciplines including emergency/critical care, internal medicine, dermatology, anaesthesiology, diagnostic imaging and primary care. It provides the clinical learning experience for DVM students & clinical residency students engaged in professional training programs, while also providing referral level and best-practice veterinary services to the public. The hospital is equipped with state-of-the-art operating rooms, central sterile facility and ICU.
Registrar/ Senior Registrar/ Veterinary Specialist position operates within the School of Veterinary Science’s teaching hospital at the Camperdown campus. The school provides a range of undergraduate & postgraduate degree programs in veterinary & associated disciplines.
Your key responsibilities will be to:
* supervise undergraduate and postgraduate clinical trainees on surgical rotations
* provide an effective surgery service for first opinion, second opinion and secondary referral cases
* effective clinical service for hospitalised cases
* take a leadership role with the training of undergraduate & postgraduate students and residents,
* provide support for cases from other clinical services within the University Veterinary Teaching Hospitals.
* Contribute to surgery skills training in the DVM program

About you

Registrar in Veterinary Small Animal Surgery (HEO Level 7) who is a veterinarian working with responsibility for his/her own clinical work and outcomes; and who is involved with clinical instruction, contributes to consultancy and/or research led by senior staff and provides high quality primary accession of clinical services. In addition, you must have:
* a degree in veterinary science registrable in New South Wales, Australia.
* Advance training in small animal surgery
* advanced skills in small animal surgery, and a demonstrated ability to work as part of a team and independently in surgery.
Senior Registrar in Veterinary Small Animal Surgery, (HEO Level 8) who is a veterinarian with responsibilities within a specific area of clinical practice, and who provides leadership in his/her chosen discipline as well as being involved in both undergraduate and postgraduate clinical training programs. In addition, you must have:
* a degree in veterinary science registrable in New South Wales, Australia
* completion of a recognised residency small animal in surgery.
Veterinary Specialist in Small Animal Surgery (HEO level 9) who is a veterinarian with at least partial responsibility for the management of a unit or division, including the management of a range of staff working within the relevant discipline or sub-discipline, who has:
* a degree in veterinary science registrable in New South Wales, Australia
* a diplomate ECVS or Diplomate ACVS or Fellowship of the ANZCVS permitting registration with the NSW Veterinary Scientists Board as a Specialist in small animal surgery.
The commencement level will be determined based on the candidate’s skills, experience and knowledge.
The 15% veterinary clinical specialist loading is available once registered as specialist by NSW Veterinary Practitioners Board.
