Position Overview
The Driver Fleet Manager will be responsible for building and managing a fleet of in-house drivers, ensuring compliance with DOT regulations, and optimizing fleet operations. This role requires an individual who has experience creating and implementing a robust driver onboarding process, managing a fleet's operational efficiency, and transitioning from third-party carriers to an insourced fleet. The ideal candidate will have expertise in DOT regulations, driver safety, and fleet management technology, particularly in utilizing Samsara to improve driver safety and ensure compliance with national DOT standards.
Key Responsibilities
Fleet Budget ManagementOversee and manage the fleet department budget, ensuring cost control and strategic expenditure planning to meet business needs. Fleet MaintenanceEnsure regular vehicle maintenance, including repairs and inspections, to minimize downtime, extend vehicle life, and maintain operational readiness. Driver Recruitment and Onboarding Lead the recruitment process to hire qualified drivers, including posting job ads, reviewing applications, conducting interviews, and managing the onboarding process. Develop and implement clear, well-written onboarding processes for drivers to ensure a smooth transition into the fleet. Regulatory Compliance and Audits Ensure all drivers have the necessary documentation from day one to meet DOT compliance requirements. Conduct regular audits to ensure the fleet complies with all applicable DOT rules and regulations, as well as company policies. Route OptimizationUtilize fleet management software (Samsara) to analyze and optimize routes, improving efficiency, reducing fuel costs, and meeting business delivery needs. Driver Safety and Training Develop and implement quarterly safety training programs, including Smith Training for defensive driving, to ensure driver safety and reduce incidents. Regularly monitor and improve Driver Safety Scores through Samsara and other telematics systems, maintaining 100% compliance with national DOT standards. Transition from Third-Party CarriersLead the transition of logistics operations from third-party carriers to in-house drivers, including the insourcing of business processes and management of new driver teams. Driver Retention and Development Develop and implement programs and incentives aimed at improving driver job satisfaction and retention. Conduct regular performance reviews with drivers, offering constructive feedback and support for continuous improvement. Emergency ResponseCoordinate emergency response plans for accidents or other incidents involving fleet vehicles, ensuring compliance with safety protocols and DOT reporting requirements. Sustainability InitiativesImplement and promote environmentally friendly practices within the fleet to reduce the carbon footprint and support sustainability goals.Requirements
ExperienceProven experience in building, managing, and scaling a driver fleet from the ground up.Experience in transitioning logistics from third-party carriers to in-house fleets, including driver recruitment and training. Regulatory KnowledgeIn-depth understanding of DOT rules and regulations, including the ability to create and manage routes that comply with DOT standards while meeting business objectives. Documentation and ComplianceAbility to ensure all drivers are properly documented and compliant with DOT regulations from day one. Driver Safety and TrainingExperience setting up and conducting quarterly safety training programs, including Smith Training for defensive driving.Ability to maintain driver safety standards and improve Driver Safety Scores using telematics tools like Samsara. Technical SkillsExpertise in utilizing fleet management software and telematics systems (such as Samsara) for route optimization, safety tracking, and compliance management. Leadership and Communication SkillsStrong leadership skills, with the ability to motivate and manage a team of drivers.Excellent communication skills for training, coaching, and conducting performance reviews.Preferred Qualifications
Experience in fleet management software beyond Samsara (e.g., Geotab, Fleet Complete). Familiarity with developing or implementing fleet maintenance programs or systems. Experience in green fleet initiatives or other environmentally sustainable practices. Previous experience in managing large-scale fleets and optimizing route efficiency for large operations. Benefits
