About the Role
The Procurement lawyer role with TMBL will be working through 4 key categories of work: Contract Drafting and Negotiation, Compliance, Procurement Advice, and Stakeholder Management. We are looking for an experienced commercial lawyer, ideally with a technology background, who can help develop an efficient process for internal vendor managers to navigate the on-boarding, risk-assessment, and contract review/negotiation stages of procurement.
This position aims to provide legal expertise in procurement and commercial functions within the Bank. The key responsibilities include drafting, reviewing, and negotiating various commercial contracts, ensuring legal compliance, and providing procurement-related advice. The role requires collaboration with different departments and stakeholders to mitigate risks, ensure compliance, and drive efficient procurement processes.
This role is a 12 month Fixed term contract initially.
Essential duties and responsibilities will include:
* Draft, review, and negotiate contracts (service agreements, license agreements, etc.)
* Standardisation and simplification of a Legal Clause and Term Library with a comprehensive fit for size/purpose library of terms. Work closely with both legal, control owners, and procurement teams to ensure alignment of clause library with business objectives.
* Create user-friendly guidelines and training materials to help stakeholders navigate legal requirements and, where appropriate, operate within a safer self-service model.
* Develop pragmatic legal solutions that balance regulatory compliance, internal stakeholder needs, and supplier relationships.
* Partner with the GSVG to engage earlier within the supplier lifecycles to enhance the collaboration and implementation of vendor risk assessment processes, establishing structured input on risk mitigation strategies for high vendors migrating from a transactional execution engagement model.
* Ensure alignment with the Bank's business goals.
* Ensure compliance with laws and regulations, including APRA Prudential Standards (CPS 231, CPS 232, CPS 234, and CPS 230), privacy laws, and the Modern Slavery Act.
* Work with legal and business teams on product disclosure requirements.
* Identify and mitigate commercial and legal risks and identify opportunities.
* Assist in developing procurement templates and risk management systems.
* Collaborate with departments (procurement, finance, cyber, risk) to provide strategic legal insights.
* Manage external legal counsel to ensure cost-effective outcomes.
About You
The ideal candidate will have the following experience and attributes:
* Admitted to practice law in Australia.
* Desirable, experience in in-house retail banking teams (mutual sector a plus), mid/top-tier law firms, or financial institutions, particularly in procurement and technology contracts.
* Strong understanding of contract law.
* Demonstrated ability to manage competing deadlines, apply the law confidently, and enjoy dealing with uncertainty and change.
* Excellent negotiation, communication, and organizational skills.
