A pretty cool, but rather busy, HR Manager roleAre you looking for something a bit more interesting than your standard “HR Manager” role? Yes? Then, please take the time to read this (admittedly long) ad.We are the Elexon Group of Companies: four electronics companies in Brendale, North of Brisbane that develop, manufacture and export niche electronic products. Our products end up on every continent, except Antarctica. We have the best electronics manufacturing equipment that money can buy.We need a new HR Manager for the group of companies. They are of different sizes, with different challenges and therefore different HR needs, so you’ll need to find the right balance. Our team is diverse: we have engineers of various disciplines, programmers, technicians, salespeople, production staff, admin/accounts people, etc. Our people come from so many parts of the world that at reception, we have a board with everyone’s flag of origin. You won’t be bored dealing with one “type”.You’ll be replacing our current HR manager who raised our HR professionalism several notches. At some stage, she bought her dream farm, which is a few hours’ drive from us. She thought she could make the logistics of getting to work feasible, but unfortunately, it’s not working for her, and she sadly needs to leave us. Fortunately, she’s given plenty of notice and is kindly helping recruit her replacement.Key ResponsibilitiesRecruitment, Selection & Talent AcquisitionA key part of the role is to find new team members. These days, that’s easier said than done, particularly for the hard-to-find skills we need. We need your creative approaches to find these people. We tend to find some overseas, which means you need to help our leaders with Employer Sponsored Working Visas. By the way, we don’t expect you to know immigration laws – we use an immigration lawyer for that.Fostering a Positive Organizational CultureYou can be a bit creative to promote a positive and inclusive company culture. That can involve team-building initiatives and events. You might also want to do employee surveys to find out what we can do better.Legal Compliance in HR ManagementThis is the probably not the stuff you’ll be excitedly telling your partner about at dinnertime, but it’s a key part of the role:You’ll make sure we comply with relevant HR laws and regulations, despite that we choose to hire people in the country with most complex HR laws on the planet; however, we don’t expect you to know every single rule: we use a consultancy firm for the trickier stuff; You’ll develop, implement and review HR policies and procedures; You’ll oversee compensation and benefits; andYou’ll ensure that if we need to let anyone of our team go, the person concerned doesn’t feel the need to tell Fair Work all about it.Employee Relations & Performance ManagementYou’ll help our leaders get the best from our teams:Being human, our valued team members occasionally have something they really disagree with or they get annoyed by another member of our valued team; we need you to teach and support our leaders to turn these “opportunities” into positive outcomes; You’ll oversee induction, training and development so everyone knows what they’re supposed to be doing (particularly new ones); You’ll ensure regular performance reviews are done, despite managers being too busy for them; andYou’ll support our leaders in handling performance-related issues (we have lots of robots, but we still need people, and people have their issues…)Strategic HR ManagementYou’ll work with senior management to plan and strategise our HR and continuously improve our HR processes. In addition to the above, you’ll be leading a project to make our HR admin more efficient. We think we spend too much time on collecting signatures, filing contracts and variations, capturing training records etc. One of your priorities will be to find and implement software to make this smooth and simple. You’ll have part time assistance from someone who is great to work with. Even then, you might not be able to achieve all of the above to a high standard. If that’s the case, we’ll prioritise; we’d rather you do the important things well and consciously decide what not to do, than burn yourself out trying to do everything badly.Qualifications and SkillsYou need to have qualifications in Human Resources, but we’re flexible on what kind of qualifications. Your attitude is more important. You need to have HR experience, preferably in a medium-sized company.Communication needs to be your strong point – both written and verbal. You need to “get stuff done”.The more you understand Australia’s complex HR laws the better! If you’re still reading, you’re probably interested. Please apply with your resume and cover letter. You (probably) won’t regret it.
