Salary: $91,702 - $104,753 (pro-rata for part-time vacancies) + up to 15.4% SuperannuationThe RoleThe Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG) Safety Operations team is looking for two experienced Senior Safety Advisors who are passionate about Work Health and Safety to be part of the safety capability that enables Defence Science and Technology research.If you have a passion for safety, demonstrable skills and experience in delivering positive safety outcomes, love working within a team, are people-focused, and have great communication and stakeholder engagement skills, we would love to hear from you.The Senior Safety Advisor is accountable under broad direction from the Regional Safety Lead to deliver professional and complex safety advice and assistance to Science and Technology (S&T) stakeholders and management within the Regional Safety Team based at Fishermans Bend, Port Melbourne in Victoria.This is achieved within the legislative framework; policies, established principles, work practices and procedures, namely the DSTG Safety Management System (SMS) - DSTGsafe. In particular:Implementing DSTGsafe and providing learning and support for continuous improvement.Undertaking both simple and complex safety investigations, including the delivery of comprehensive reports and lessons learnt.Communicating proactively with senior management and researchers by:highlighting safety issues for their attention;providing professional and timely safety guidance and assistance; andproactively sharing your knowledge and influencing for positive safety outcomes.Leading safety projects to implement DSTG safety cultural improvement and implementation of the Defence Safety Strategy.Providing guidance and leadership to less experienced safety advisors as part of their career development.Proactively engaging with safety specialists (Hazard Leads) to ensure consistency with hazard-specific advice and guidance to researchers, as required.About our TeamThe Safety team engages with researchers from all areas of DSTG and partners to achieve better safety outcomes for Defence research work through the delivery of professional safety advice and assistance. The safety function was divided into two streams comprising Safety Operations, and Safety Strategy and Assurance. The streams work closely and cooperatively together, but with some distinct accountabilities.Safety Operations is delivered through two regional teams based in Fishermans Bend (Port Melbourne), Victoria and Edinburgh (Adelaide), South Australia. These vacancies are for two senior safety advisors based in Port Melbourne, with some necessity for occasional travel to other regional sites in the ACT, NSW and TAS as well as regional Victoria.The Operations team is responsible for supporting researchers to implement the elements of DSTGsafe in a consistent way across their specific programs of work. It does this through the provision of professional health and safety advice and assistance, through reach back to hazard specialists, and through a continuous improvement approach to the SMS to support a fit for purpose and compliant SMS.The Strategy and Assurance team leads the ongoing development of DSTGsafe and is responsible for the development and implementation of the Group safety assurance framework.Our Ideal CandidateOur ideal candidates will be highly motivated and capable, self-sufficient and resilient safety professionals with proven experience in delivering sustainable effective safety outcomes.They will bring the following skills and attributes:Experience working in a similar role, such as a research or novel high-risk environment, or government agency, in particular providing safety subject matter expertise on hazardous chemicals (hazardous substances and dangerous goods) and/or plant.Well-developed organisational skills with the ability to set priorities and meet deadlines, focusing on ensuring the effective and efficient application of DSTGsafe and delivery of projects.Demonstrated strong interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills, including the ability to communicate with clarity, listen, understand, and adapt their communication style to the audience.Lead and participate in a range of safety investigations, including the delivery of informative and factual reports, assigned corrective actions and lessons learnt.Strong stakeholder management and engagement skills including the ability to nurture internal and external relationships.Working as a team player with a willingness to share learning and support peers.Sound judgement, intelligence and common sense.Negotiate confidently and commit to action.Behave calmly under stress.
