APS 6 Engineering professionals are accountable under broad direction to perform and achieve complex engineering and specialist work within an integrated workforce. They are accountable to ensure they have knowledge of and compliance with legislative frameworks, government decision-making and Defence’s mission and policy requirements. Leading and coaching teams to set work priorities and manage workflows, building team capability through coaching, feedback and developing the quality of work undertaken by others within a work unit. They may exercise the associated people and financial responsibilities to achieve work unit outcomes.
Considerable level of stakeholder engagement and will liaise with stakeholders in relation to complex or difficult issues. They will be required to identify, anticipate and respond to stakeholders’ needs and expectations to achieve work unit and Defence outcomes. They will be accountable to contribute towards ongoing self-improvement and professional development.
This role is eligible for an additional remuneration benefit known in Defence as a Building Defence Capability Payment (BDCP). This enables Defence to provide a premium, in addition to the base salary otherwise payable under the Defence Enterprise Agreement (DEA), for positions in occupational disciplines/classifications that are critical to Defence capability. Enable navy to comprehend and understand the effectiveness of complex engineering capabilities that contribute to defence of the nation.
Identification, quantification & management of risks to acquisition, sustainment and operation of maritime capabilities.

Knowledge management that captures and maintains engineering knowledge (lesson learnt) for efficient and effective use across existing and future programs of work.
To achieve these business outcomes the following core services, frame the broad scope of specialist engineering activities and functions delivered by Navy Engineering teams:
Develop, identify, apply, measure and advise on Navy’s materiel requirements.
Identify and contribute to design and implementation of solutions (working with industry and other parts of Defence to remediate issues and new system designs to meet changing needs).
Management of engineering and technical risks through assessment, analysis and advising on effective treatment options.
Support development of key materiel and engineering policies that codify Navy’s application of good engineering practices.

Our Ideal CandidateThe ideal candidate for Navy Engineering will be able to lead a small team, ensure compliance, and support the delivery of Navy's capability through a demonstrated knowledge of implementing and assessing test and trial programs. The successful candidate will maintain a strong focus on quality and communication while promoting a learning culture to drive continuous improvement.
Electromagnetic Environmental Effects – Knowledge and experience in field of Radio Frequency hazard and safety control and their associated standards and practices.
Data Networks – Knowledge and experience in network design, implementation, and troubleshooting; network vender certification, expertise in routing, switching, virtualisation, software defined networking, and working with Linux Operation System.
Terrestrial Communications – Knowledge and experience of radio frequency propagation theory, practice, and standards, terrestrial communication system design, analysis and implementation.
Navigation Systems – Knowledge and experience of System Engineering, Navigation systems, sensors (position, navigation, time) and international rules regarding safety at sea and Collision Regulation compliance.
Satellite Communications – Knowledge and experience of satellite communication theory, practices and standards, satellite terminal design, installation and testing.
Remote Autonomous Platform – Knowledge and experience working with uncrewed systems, programming languages, application of standards, regulations, or policy to engineering systems.
Optronics – Knowledge and experience in Laser systems, CCTV, Laser Safety and relevant standards and frameworks in addition to experience with optical system design and testing.
Sonar & Acoustic Intelligence – Knowledge of Systems Engineering, underwater acoustics and signal processing or oceanographic, and demonstrated experience with knowledge, implementation, and management of sensors, and the ability to analyse and interpret sonar data.
Electronic Warfare – Knowledge and experience in Antenna and Propagation, Signal Processing, Remote Sensing, Computational Intelligence and Model Based Systems Engineering.
As an APS 6 Engineering Professional, you will have some of the following key additional duties to deliver complex engineering services:

EligibilitySecurity Clearance:Applicants must be able to obtain and maintain a security clearance at “Negative Vetting Level 1”.
Mandatory Qualifications:This engineering position requires a Bachelor of Engineering from an Australian institution, or a qualification gained elsewhere, that satisfies the requirements of the Washington Accord for recognition as a Professional Engineer.
