There are 23 Flexible Schools throughout Australia who offer a full-time and multiyear secondary education program for young people who have disengaged from mainstream schooling. Enrolled young people may express a broad range of complex education and social needs and flexible schools respond with a variety of flexible and innovative teaching and learning practices including vocational planning and the development of social connectedness.The purpose of a Flexible School is to provide young people with a varied and holistic set of learning experiences supporting them to identify and pursue an individual transition to adulthood, employment, further education and training and social connectedness.ABOUT THE ROLEThe role of the Indigenous Community Engagement Officer (ICEO) is to deliver 'outside the school gate', intensive case management and wrap-around support to highly vulnerable Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander young people. The ICEO will engage with young people, families, elders, and community members to nurture the cultural identity of Indigenous students and support them to re-engage in education. The support provided could include engagement, wellbeing and social inclusion responses and program activities for the school that directly enhance engagement, educational achievement and post school transition pathways.To perform this role, it is essential that the person who holds the position be an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person. It is therefore a genuine occupational requirement under section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 that applicants are Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders.Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of Indigenous societies and cultures and an understanding of the issues affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in contemporary Australian society and the diversity of circumstances of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.Demonstrated ability to communicate sensitively and effectively, including the requirement for proper negotiation and consultation with local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people on matters relevant to the delivery of education services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people.Tertiary qualifications at Certificate level or equivalent qualifications relevant for a Youth Support Worker or such knowledge and experience to successfully carry out the duties of this position.An understanding of and commitment to principles of social justice.Sound level of verbal and written communication skills, including participating in meeting processes, report writing, case notes and negotiation skills.Understanding of current youth work practice, trends and issues in service provision to marginalised young people particularly within the alternate education sector.Skills in computing (especially word processing, Internet) and skills, or the ability to develop skills in database use.Proven ability to work under limited supervision and in an integrated manner as a member of a multi-disciplinary team.Current and valid Blue Card or the ability to obtain.Current and valid Queensland Driver's License.WHAT WE CAN OFFER YOUSalary sacrificing benefits, including FBT exempt payments of up to $15,900 p/a12.75% Superannuation contributionInduction, Wellbeing and Professional Development OpportunitiesHOW TO APPLY (Please upload documents in PDF format)To apply for a position, please complete the application form below.
