Veterinary Officers (Epidemiology)
Specified Calling Level 2 - 4 | Pool Ref AV8535
We are currently seeking a motivated and skilled epidemiologist to join our team permanently within the Animal Biosecurity and Welfare (ABW) branch. We are also looking to establish a pool of suitable applicants for any opportunities that arise over the duration of the open pool.
What is an Open Pool?
We encourage applicants to apply at any time for the duration of the open pool. Candidates will be assessed, and interviews will be conducted on a regular basis. If you are found suitable, you will be placed in a pool from which appointments may be made for similar vacancies across the department. Please note, being appointed to the pool does not guarantee your placement to a position.
About the opportunity
In this role you will be part of an epidemiology team which is involved in providing epidemiological support and advice to the Chief Veterinary Officer and Deputy Chief Veterinary Officers across all biosecurity areas of prevention, preparedness and response. This will include working in areas including but not limited to animal welfare, animal health surveillance, disease control, emergency animal preparedness and response, inter-state and intra-state biosecurity conditions, product integrity and livestock identification and movement.
You will contribute to national and state epidemiological projects or issues relevant to WA’s animal health and biosecurity status. This will involve data collation, analysis for biosecurity intelligence and trend analysis, designing of surveillance plans, investigation of disease outbreaks, providing technical input into biosecurity programs, policies, plans and procedures, modelling, risk analysis, and the review and development of biosecurity databases and information systems.
This is your opportunity to apply your knowledge, undertake complex and timely risk assessments, and contribute to policy development and reform to underpin biosecurity and livestock industry programs to innovate and implement surveillance and disease control and biosecurity programs of state and national significance.
We are looking for individuals with:
1. A degree in Veterinary Science (obtained from an Australian university or recognised equivalent) and currently recognised registration (or able to obtain prior to commencement) with the Veterinary Practice Board of Western Australia – registration must be maintained whilst employed by the department.
2. Knowledge and experience in epidemiology. Post-Graduate qualifications or Australian and New Zealand College of Veterinary Scientists memberships in epidemiology or public health are highly desirable.
3. Excellent interpersonal communication skills and the ability to apply conceptual, analytical and problem skills to provide risk-based analysis of biosecurity issues.
