Position Information Smithfield Public School is in the Fairfield school area of the Metropolitan South and West Performance Directorate. It is one of the first national schools established in 1850. There are approximately 632 students enrolled P–6. This includes a preschool, an Opportunity Class, an Early Intervention program and 6 classes for students with disabilities. Smithfield Public School also hosts a satellite class from ASPECT, the governing body for people with Autism. Students come from a diverse range of language backgrounds approximating 84% of the student population. Of these students, 74% have English as an additional language and there are several students who are New Arrivals. The New Arrivals are largely Arabic and Assyrian speakers from Iraq and Syria. Over 30 languages are represented in the school community, with Arabic, Assyrian and Vietnamese being the largest groups. The small number of students who identify as Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) are supported by a strong commitment to ATSI education. Selection Criteria 1) Approval to teach special education and/or experience in teaching students with Autism and/or mild intellectual disabilities. 2) Demonstrated ability to develop engaging, differentiated, data driven learning programs to improve student outcomes. 3) Ability to develop dynamic Personalised Learning and Support Plans that respond to the social, emotional, behavioural, physical and academic needs of each student. 4) Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to develop strong relationships with students, staff, parents and external agencies, to cater for the complex and cultural needs of all students. 5) Demonstrated ability to accommodate for a diverse range of challenging behaviours through effective management and wellbeing practices.
