About the role
We are seeking a Senior Data Scientist to join our Strategy and Future Networks Demand Management team. The team is focusing developing novel programs to allow more renewable generation, smarter demand management and optimisation of Customer Energy Resources (incl. batteries and EVs). This is aprt of Essential Energy strategic effort to accelerate the energy transition.
The Senior Data Scientist will be the go-to person for developing new analysis and modelling capabilities that will underpin significant changes in the network demand management operations. This is part of a transformation program to enhance the networks utilisation by introducing dynamic operating envelopes. The role is new and will allow for a proactive data scientist to make their mark.
The team is working to delivery very tangible benefits to customers in the near term in parallel to working on executing the long term operations strategy. A key example is the introduction of dynamic export limits that will allow customers to optimise electricity generation from their solar systems.
This role will preferably be based within the Essential Energy footprint with the ability to work from home in a hybrid work environment.
Responsibilities:
* Develop models to predict and track the impact of customer energy resources adaptation on network operations
* Support the development and implementation of demand management strategies for CER such as EV chargers, hot waters systems, batteries and other assets
* Support ad hoc analysis required for business decisions and operational considerations
* Engage internal stakeholders to source relevant data, create metrics, set up dashboards to track ongoing activities and improve the usage of data in business decisions
* Support the development of a DERMS/CERMS solution and provide feedback from real time operations on the effectiveness of Dynamic Operating Envelopes
* Contribute to internal and external reporting on relevant areas of work
* Support the development of business cases to set up new projects and deploy new solutions
About You
You will have extensive experience in utilising data science solve problems in industry.
Specifically, you will have the following:
* Proven capability for analysing large datasets to optimize and improve product development or business operations.
* Track record of being able to understand key business problems, source data and develop data models needed to support making business and operational decisions
* History of leveraging your data science experience, machine learning, modelling, and advanced analytics skills to build data models
* Strategic and critical thinking skills with good judgement and supported by a bias for action and outcomes
* High levels of influencing and communication skills including the ability to liaise effectively with internal and external stakeholders at all levels, supported by excellent writing skills
* Experience in troubleshooting and solving complex technical problems on large datasets
* Experience in computer operations, business systems and tools such as R, Python and SQL
* Strong understanding of digital / technologies and how they drive business value, with exposure to Cloud based computing experience such as Databricks and Azure
Required Qualifications
* Bachelor Data Science, Computer Science, Science or demonstrated capability through past employment experience and/or relevant qualifications
Desirable
* Experience working in the energy sector or a similar operational domain
* Understanding of IoT communications protocols
* Experience working in projects related to Consumer Energy Resources, demand management and/or Virtual Power Plants
* Research thesis in a relevant field, demonstrating in-depth analysis capabilities and communication
