Our engineering team is seeking an experienced, dynamic and collaborative engineering professional to lead our engineering team in developing new Trace detection products and providing sustaining support for existing products. The Sr. Director, Instruments Engineering will lead and mentor a team of scientists and engineers responsible for Trace detection technology and engineering through the entire product lifecycle from concept ideation to product sunset. This is a managerial role as well as technical engineering one. This leader will be expected to both manage the team developing novel systems but also perform investigations leading to advances in our technology. As the engineering leader of a core Rapiscan Laboratories technology area, the Sr. Director, Instruments Engineering will report to the CTO and work with the engineering leaders responsible for other core technology areas including X-ray, Computed Tomography, Software platforms, Hardware platforms, Cybersecurity, and Artificial Intelligence. Responsibilities Personnel management – you will manage engineering and scientific managers as well as subject matter experts. Program management and engineering execution – You will be responsible for ensuring that the product vision is realized through excellence in execution. You will set the technical project plans for development and sustaining efforts that incorporate inter-dependencies between functional disciplines (e.g., mechanical, electrical, controls, software). Technical leadership – You will be responsible for co-developing the technical strategy with the CTO, and for developing and maintaining a technical roadmap that will continue to innovate from a technical standpoint. The Sr. Director, Instruments Engineering will have the flexibility and experience to decide the best approach for product development while maintaining the product vision. Strategy development – Serving as the engineering leader for Trace detection, you will work in an interdisciplinary manner with peers and colleagues in Engineering, Sales, Service, Product Management, and Operations to develop company and product strategy. Budget Management – You will be responsible for managing the annual Instruments Engineering department budget that includes personnel, consulting, prototyping costs, equipment cost, travel and entertainment, professional development, patent costs and other costs. Occasional travel as needed for customer engagements, conferences, and collaboration meetings with the Rapiscan leadership team. Qualifications Advanced degree in Engineering, Chemistry, Physics or related field. 12+ years of proven team leadership in technology and product development. Experience in Ion Mobility Spectrometry and Mass Spectrometry instrument design and applications. Demonstrated track record of leading product development efforts that meet cost, schedule, and performance goals. Demonstrated ability to solve complex design and engineering problems. Thorough understanding of the commercial product life cycle. Proven leadership in managing a multi-disciplined technical engineering team. Experienced in estimating, creating, and actively managing project and program budgets. Familiarity with electrical and mechanical design. Familiar with international agency testing standards (CE, ETL, UL, environmental etc.). Familiarity with Agile product management and similar tools to structure BOMs. Familiarity with software processes and tools. Desired Characteristics : Experience in leading and managing design engineering projects and programs for embedded systems in the aerospace and/or aviation security industries. Experience with designing component technologies and products in a regulated market (medical, aviation, utilities, transportation, etc.). Cursory knowledge of artificial intelligence methods. Ability to drive program deliverables and identify and resolve technical and program issues / decisions.
