DIRECTOR COMMUNITY SERVICES About the Organisation Aurukun Shire Council plays a crucial role in leading the community and addressing the needs of its residents. The Council works closely with various stakeholders, including government agencies, non-governmental organisations, and local businesses, to improve service delivery and create opportunities for the community it serves. Key focus areas for the Aurukun Shire Council include community safety, governance, economic development, preservation of cultural identity, environmental management, postal and banking services, aged care and child care provision. About the Role The Director Community Services is responsible for the delivery of community services to the Aurukun community to encourage an environment of respect for persons and to build community pride. The position will also be responsible for the delivery of specific services including childcare, aged care, community events, funeral assistance, community engagement, Indigenous Knowledge Centre (IKC), community radio, library, community security, environmental health, and animal control. Key Accountabilities Provide leadership to the staff that form the Community Services department; Contribute to the ASC management team in a proactive and constructive manner; Participate in the formation of the budget for the department and monitor the performance of the department against the adopted budget; Ensure the delivery of all services that the department is responsible for in an efficient and effective manner and in accordance with the council's adopted annual operational plan; Pursue the goals and objectives of ASC's 5 year Corporate Plan; Ensure that meaningful timely reports are provided to the Council and CEO as required to enable Council decision making; Monitor the performance of all staff within the department to ensure a positive culture of staff development and support and performance improvement; Contribute and assist the CEO in the development of strategy to build a better community; Develop and maintain constructive relationships with relevant government and non-government agencies; Ensure compliance with all Council policies including the Code of Conduct and model behaviour at all times that supports the Council's values; Follow all reasonable requests as directed from the CEO. Qualifications, Skills and Attributes A broad senior management background; A strategic focus and demonstrated track record in values-based leadership of multi-disciplinary teams; Demonstrated capability to oversee key aspects of Community Services functions; Experience in budgeting, financial management, and reporting; A passion for making a positive difference and influencing community outcomes; Open unrestricted Car (Manual) drivers' licence. Key Selection Criteria Recognised tertiary qualifications relevant to the role; Demonstrated experience in the delivery and management of community services at a community level particularly in an Aboriginal community with a specific focus on Aged Care, Child Care, and Community Development; Experience in successfully communicating, negotiating, and interacting with Aboriginal people and demonstrated knowledge of Aboriginal culture and customs; Proven ability to develop effective and inclusive relations with Indigenous and/or diverse communities and stakeholder groups in a way that recognises their diversity and cultural values, while aligning with organisational and community values; Demonstrated experience in community engagement with the ability and understanding of engaging a wide cross-section of the community; A positive and proactive approach to resolving community issues with innovative and imaginative solutions; Demonstrated experience in leading teams to achieve agreed outcomes and performance to high standards in terms of quality and meeting budgetary requirements.
