About the Role The Senior Technical Officer will join the newly formed School of Engineering program being offered at Deakin's Burwood campus. This pivotal role will primarily focus on areas such as soil and water testing, establishment of new facilities, and ensuring safe operation of spaces. As the Senior Technical Officer Civil and Environmental Engineering, you will utilise your expertise in environmental engineering/science, chemistry, practical civil engineering experience, and health and safety knowledge to support the development and delivery of practical teaching, research, and administrative duties in the areas of Civil and Environmental Engineering. The Senior Technical Officer performs a critical role in the School of Engineering by providing expert technical support to staff, students, and stakeholders conducting experiments for teaching and research. The Senior Technical Officer will be a confident communicator and seek feedback from staff, students, and external stakeholders. The ideal candidate will be independent, proactive, and able to build productive relationships. This is a cross-campus team which will require the incumbent to occasionally travel to the Waurn Ponds campus for training sessions with peers in the School of Engineering. Your Key Responsibilities Will Include: Research, propose, coordinate and implement technical solutions to support the strategic initiatives and operations of the School of Engineering. Provide hands-on support in a lab environment. Proactively engage with teaching activities, in collaboration with academic staff, by providing specialist knowledge and training on how to work on equipment and engineering software predominantly relevant to the civil and environmental engineering discipline. This will include student activities related to teaching in coursework, HDR, or final year projects. Ensure that laboratory equipment is maintained and operated to a safe and high standard and carry out minor repairs to equipment and coordinate with stakeholders within Deakin or outside service engineers as necessary. Strive for excellence and consult regularly with clients to clarify who requires the information, the purpose for which it is required, criteria for success, and where and when advice and recommendation is required. Support various laboratory projects for teaching and research as required, including outreach, industry engagement, and inter-school activities. Acquire and ensure appropriate stocks of consumables are maintained, equipment is kept in good working order, and calibration and maintenance of a wide range of laboratory equipment. To be successful, you'll have: A Degree with subsequent relevant experience; or Extensive experience and specialist knowledge or broad knowledge in technical fields such as chemistry, water quality testing, and environmental science/engineering; or An equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education/training.
