Job Description COBOL Developer Permanent Position| Canberra Location (Potential for Remote) | Salary Negotiable | Baseline Clearance Desirable OVERVIEW We are seeking a skilled COBOL Developer to join our Big 4 consulting client's team, working on large-scale government and financial sector projects.
The role involves maintaining, enhancing, and modernising legacy COBOL systems while also utilising procedural Java for integration and modernisation efforts.
YOUR RESPONSIBILITIES Develop, maintain, and enhance COBOL applications in a complex enterprise environment.
Analyse system requirements and translate them into robust technical solutions.
Troubleshoot and resolve software issues in legacy COBOL systems.
Work with procedural Java to support system integrations and modernisation initiatives.
Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including business analysts, testers, and system architects.
Assist in system modernisation and migration projects where applicable.
Ensure compliance with security and regulatory requirements.
REQUIRED SKILLS & EXPERIENCE: Strong experience in COBOL development, ideally on Mainframe (IBM z/OS, AS/400) or Micro Focus COBOL environments.
Knowledge of JCL, CICS, VSAM, and DB2 is highly desirable.
Experience with procedural Java for system enhancements and integrations.
Experience working with large-scale enterprise systems in banking, finance, or government sectors.
Familiarity with Agile methodologies and DevOps practices.
Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
Excellent communication and stakeholder management abilities.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS: Previous experience working with a consulting firm or in a government environment.
Exposure to modernisation projects (e.g., migrating COBOL applications to cloud or other platforms).
Baseline Security Clearance or eligibility to obtain one.
