Whether you have recently finished school, currently studying, already in the workforce or you have no experience at all, you'll be paid from day one. You'll gain all the skills needed with extensive on-the-job training.
As a Communications Operator (known in the Navy as Communication Systems Specialist), you will be sending, receiving and analysing communications and highly classified information over large distances, at sea and ashore. You’ll act as the communications hub, managing and operating a range of communication systems to send and receive information between stakeholders, Command, crew, submarines and ships.
Your primary duties at sea will focus on the transmission and reception of classified information using advanced military and commercial satellite and radio equipment. You will be the communications link to support operations such as search and rescue, disaster relief, diving team, boarding parties and deciphering encrypted information. You will also conduct short-range communications with other ships using visual communication methods such as Morse code with flashing light and flag signalling.
Your duties could include, but aren’t limited to:
1. Commercial and military satellite communications
2. Radio communications link for the ship (boarding parties and diving team)
3. Handling classified and sensitive information
4. Operating communication networks to support disaster relief, distress calls and search and rescue operations
5. Managing communications between stakeholders, government agencies, submarines and ships
6. Encoding and decoding encrypted messages, signals and classified information
7. Flashing light (Morse code)
8. Flag signalling and ceremonial procedures
9. Providing specialist communications advice to Command and crew
10. Tactical use of portable communications equipment during operations and missions
11. Basic administration of onboard ICT networks
12. Providing advice for the safe and effective manoeuvring of ships at sea
As a sailor, you’ll learn additional skills and duties to become highly trained and efficient in supporting the whole ship. This may include ship security, firefighting team, flood repair, flight deck duties, replenishment at sea, ammunitioning, first aid or line handling.
