Reporting to the Finance Manager, the Project Accountant will be an essential part of a small finance team. This role will work in close collaboration with key stakeholders including the Finance Manager, Head of Research Operations, the Grants team, the Development team (philanthropic fundraising), the Executive team to effectively execute the duties of the role. The Role The Project Accountant will be responsible for the financial management and reporting of projects. Ensuring compliance with requirements from funding bodies and organisational policies, this role will oversee budget tracking, prepare financial statements, and collaborate with research leads to support the most effective and efficient use of available funds. This role will be responsible for the end-to-end financial accounting and management of projects, which will include but is not limited to the following duties: Set up and close down projects and associated budgets in Project Accounting system Prepare project budgets and other financial information for funding applications, in collaboration with the Principal Investigators and other key stakeholders. Collaborate with team leaders, to develop their annual operational budgets, pricing frameworks, and manage their costing model and cost recovery, to ensure recovery to acceptable standards. Monitor, track and provide monthly reports on revenue and expenditure, and integrate finance data into project dashboards. Ensure compliance with funding requirements and adherence to organisational policies, accounting standards, and regulatory requirements. Monthly accounting for projects including allocation of indirect costs, income recognition, income accruals and forecasting of project expenses and revenues. Analyse budgets and actual spends, providing insight into the current financial status of project(s), outlining issues, potential changes, and adverse trends/risks. Ensure timely and accurate financial reporting to funding bodies. Regular engagement and communication on status, issues and success with the key stakeholders. Contribute to the annual budgeting process for the Institute and support the annual business and capital planning processes, proactively working with stakeholders to understand demand on funding. Mentor the non-finance stakeholders to understand the financial information and provide accounting advice. Support annual audits, ensuring the appropriate evidentiary standards are maintained and respond to auditor enquiries. Act as the system administrator for the project accounting software, including the maintenance of project status listings and accurate records of grant agreements, financial transactions, and correspondence. Train and support stakeholders on financial processes related to grants and budgets. Your Profile Greater than 5 years of relevant work-related experience, with proven experience delivering relevant responsibilities. Degree level qualification in Finance, Accounting or a related field. Knowledge of grant management and compliance regulations. Demonstrated computer skills, with specific knowledge of: - MS Office applications (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc.). - Microsoft Dynamic GP or similar systems. Previous experience in the not-for-profit, and/or medical research sector. Experience in preparing detailed/complex budgets for international funding agencies.
