About the role
North Australian Aboriginal Justice Agency is seeking a Senior Solicitor / Intermediate Solicitor - Criminal Law to join our dynamic team in Darwin, Katherine, Tennant Creek, or Alice Springs. In this role, you will be responsible for providing high-quality legal representation and advice to our clients, with a focus on criminal law matters.
What you'll be doing
* Represent clients in criminal court proceedings, including bail applications, pleas, trials and appeals
* Advise clients on criminal law matters and their legal rights and options
* Conduct legal research, prepare legal documents, and liaise with relevant stakeholders
* Maintain detailed and accurate case files and records
* Contribute to the development and implementation of NAAJA's legal strategies and policies
* Collaborate with the wider legal team to ensure the provision of a comprehensive and effective legal service
* Mentor junior staff and provide guidance and support as required
What we're looking for
* Admission (or eligibility for admission) as a legal practitioner in the Northern Territory with a minimum of 5 years post-admission experience
* Significant experience in criminal law, with a strong understanding of the legal system and court procedures
* Excellent legal research, writing and advocacy skills
* Ability to communicate effectively with clients from diverse backgrounds
* Strong organisational and time management skills
* Commitment to social justice and working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
Requirements
* Current Driver's Licence
* Ability to obtain a satisfactory “Working with Children Clearance” (Ochre Card) upon commencement
* Satisfactory criminal history check and no history of disqualification from employment by a legal practice
* Ability and willingness to travel to remote areas
