Job Title: Sign Writer / Printer
Job Summary:
Sign Writers and Printers are responsible for designing, creating, and producing high-quality signage, printed materials, and graphics for diverse applications. They use a mix of traditional craftsmanship and modern digital technologies to meet client specifications, ensuring visually appealing and durable results across various mediums and surfaces.
Key Responsibilities: Consult with clients to interpret proposals, sketches, and instructions, determining the composition and style of signs or printed materials. Design and produce signs, graphics, and printed products using computer software, sign-making machines, and printing presses. Measure and calculate dimensions, prepare surfaces, and apply paints, adhesives, or decals for signage. Operate and maintain letterpress, lithographic, flexographic, gravure, digital, and offset printing presses to produce materials like brochures, posters, packaging, and stationery. Mix inks and solvents, regulate paper and ink supplies, and monitor quality during print runs. Create custom vehicle wraps, wall murals, and three-dimensional signs for a variety of surfaces, including brick, metal, glass, timber, and plastic. Install signage on-site, including elevated or large-scale projects requiring scaffolding. Perform routine maintenance, repairs, and adjustments to sign-making and printing equipment. Prepare cost estimates and timelines for client projects. Qualifications: Australia: AQF Certificate III with at least two years of on-the-job training, or AQF Certificate IV. At least three years of relevant experience may substitute for formal qualifications. Registration or licensing may be required for specific roles. Skills and Competencies: Strong artistic and creative abilities to design visually appealing products. Proficiency in graphic design software (e.g., Adobe Illustrator, CorelDRAW) and printing technologies. Attention to detail and the ability to follow precise client specifications. Knowledge of materials, adhesives, and finishing techniques for signs and prints. Physical ability to handle installations and work with scaffolding. Familiarity with workplace safety protocols and regulatory standards. Specializations: Signage: Wall murals, custom vehicle wraps, and gold leaf lettering. Creation of three-dimensional signs and custom-designed graphics. Printing: Flexographic, lithographic, and digital printing for materials such as books, magazines, posters, and packaging. Small offset and digital printing for quick, high-quality outputs.
