The Oncofetal Ecosystem lab is involved in research at the intersection of cancer genomics and immunology and is committed to the development of next generation of medical therapies. The research in the laboratory involves cutting edge single-cell and spatial transcriptomics technologies, bioinformatics, machine learning and innovative approaches for mRNA vaccine development.THE OPPORTUNITYThe Research Officer, Level 1 to 3, is accountable for conducting independent experiments within their Research Platform in a collaborative framework with their supervisor. In principle, an RO conducts research work under guidance from a more senior scientist and they would be demonstrating increasing independence as they progress from RO1 to RO3.Salary: Up to $101,800 + 14% super + salary packaging (depending on experience)Employment Type: 2 year term contract with possibility to extendWHAT YOU WILL DORESEARCH OFFICER – LEVEL 1An RO1 would conduct original research under limited supervision, and be required to make contributions in more than one of the following areas:Completion of research projects in an efficient and timely manner, with outcomes published under joint authorship in peer-reviewed journalsContribution to team and Garvan research projectsPresentation of original research at national/ international scientific conferences, and as invited to seminars locally and/or nationallyCo-supervision and mentoring of students and junior research staffProvision of supervisory assistance in preparation of research grant proposals, including contribution of dataContribution to improvements in techniques, quantitative methods and quality controlRESEARCH OFFICER – LEVEL 2An RO2 would normally have worked for at least one year as an RO1 (or equivalent), and meet many of the above criteria for RO1 at an increased level of performance. In addition, an RO2 would make contributions to some of the following areas:Demonstrated participation in administrative duties of the research group, e.g. oversight of day-to-day lab activitiesPlayed an increasing role in the development of research projects and collaborationsParticipated in Garvan’s organisation and management, via committee membership involvement in training and mentoring, journal clubs etc.Participated in professional activities as a member of scientific societiesParticipated in communication of science to the public, via public seminars and media interviewsRESEARCH OFFICER – LEVEL 3Performs with limited guidanceAn RO3 would normally have worked for at least one year at RO2 (or equivalent), and meet most of the above criteria for RO2 at an increased level of performance. In addition, an RO3 would make contributions to some of the following areas:Played a significant role in the development of research projects and collaborationsDemonstrated prudential management of grant funds receivedActed as an Associate Investigator on project and grant applicationsBeen involved in the recruitment of research assistants and studentsABOUT YOUThe key skills and experience of a Research Officer include:PhD or MD in molecular biology, genomics, oncology or a related fieldMinimum of 2 years relevant experienceExperience with scRNA-seq and spatial transcriptomics techniques is requiredExperience in working with clinical samplesPrior experience in histology, tissue sectioning and imaging techniquesExperience in various molecular biology and tissue culture/ primary cell culture techniquesPrior experience in multi colour flow cytometryHave a strong track record of scientific publications/presentationsStrong problem solving and analytical skillsHave a strong commitment to continuous delivery of high-quality workHave excellent communication skills for written reports and oral presentationsDemonstrate a capacity to work collaboratively with researchers across laboratoriesBe well organised and a good time manager with sound administrative abilitiesHOW TO APPLYTo apply for this position, please submit your application with a CV and cover letter as one document, stating why you are interested in this role.
