The Foundry After-Cast Supervisor at Metso Ballina is responsible for investigating, developing, and testing materials—primarily cast irons and alloy compositions—for manufacturing and industrial applications. The role supports the foundry's material selection, heat treatment processes, failure analysis, and quality control, ensuring alignment with engineering specifications, production standards, and cost-efficiency requirements. The incumbent applies theoretical knowledge in metallurgy and material sciences to improve production processes and advise stakeholders on material suitability and innovation.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
•Conduct research and development of metallurgical processes, with a focus on improving material performance and manufacturing
efficiency
•Design and coordinate laboratory test work programs to evaluate material properties and performance
•Investigate and evaluate the properties, microstructure, and performance of cast irons and alloys
•Review and ensure the accuracy of design and selection of equipment and materials used in manufacturing to meet required mechanical
and chemical specifications
•Develop and maintain technical process documentation, including material specifications and process control procedures
•Plan and design processes for melting raw materials using induction furnaces to create specific alloys for industrial use
•Supervise the industrial processing of multiple grades of cast iron involving thermal and chemical changes
•Provide expert advice on material selection to achieve mechanical properties in a cost-efficient and application-specific manner
•Support product development by suggesting material improvements and validating them through testing and performance evaluation
•Ensure proper and efficient use of raw materials, equipment, and plant processes in compliance with safety and quality standards
•Evaluate finished products for conformance to engineering and quality specifications and advise on suitability for specific applications
•Lead quality control initiatives, liaising with the quality department to manage non-conformances, scrap issues, and supplier
performance.
•Support the broader leadership team by contributing to strategic planning, KPI reviews, and performance improvement initiatives
To Be Successful in the role you will need:
ESSENTIAL
•At least 5 years' experience in evaluating the mechanical, thermal and chemical properties of materials
•A degree in metallurgy or chemical engineering
•Ability to understand technical solutions for mineral processing applications
•Demonstrated commitment to promoting health, safety and environment
•Strong interpersonal skills
•Proven ability to effectively supervise team members
