Contract Details:
* Start Date: 1 May 2025
* Duration: 12 months with potential extensions (up to 24 additional months )
* Location: Onsite in Canberra, ACT (Remote work is not available )
* Hours: Full-time (40 hours per week )
* Security Clearance: NV1 (or ability to obtain)
Role Overview:
As a Senior Data Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, development, and maintenance of data-driven solutions that support Services Australia’s digital transformation initiatives. You will play a key role in optimising data pipelines, ensuring high-quality data management, and supporting business intelligence functions across the agency.
You will also be responsible for maintaining and securing Microsoft environments, ensuring the seamless operation of enterprise platforms while providing technical leadership and mentorship within the team.
This role requires strong problem-solving skills, the ability to work under minimal supervision, and a proactive approach to identifying and implementing improvements in data processes.
Key Responsibilities:
1. End-to-End Microsoft Platform Support – Maintain and optimise Services Australia’s Microsoft environment, including cloud and on-prem solutions.
2. Subject Matter Expert (SME) Leadership – Provide technical leadership and guidance to teams, ensuring best practices in data engineering and security .
3. Solution Design & Development – Build scalable, reliable, and secure data solutions that enhance decision-making and service delivery.
4. Security & Compliance – Implement patching, access control, and governance measures to ensure data security and regulatory compliance .
5. Business Intelligence & Analytics – Support data-driven decision-making through the development of reports, dashboards, and insights .
6. Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement – Work closely with internal teams and partner agencies to align data strategies with business objectives .
Technical Expertise Required:
This role requires experience working in large-scale, complex enterprise environments, particularly with the End User Platform technology stack. Candidates must have in-depth knowledge of one or more of the following:
Microsoft & Cloud Technologies:
* Microsoft Active Directory (AD) – Management of users, policies, authentication, and access control.
* Microsoft 365 & Azure AD – Enterprise-level experience in identity management and cloud administration .
* SCCM (System Center Configuration Manager) – Automating software deployments, patches, and updates.
* Exchange, Skype, and SharePoint – Supporting enterprise communication and collaboration tools.
* SQL Server – Database management, optimisation, and integration with analytics platforms.
Data Engineering & Business Intelligence:
* Data Modelling & Architecture – Designing and implementing scalable database structures and solutions.
* Data Quality & Integrity – Ensuring high-quality, trustworthy data that aligns with business objectives.
* Data Integration & ETL Processes – Extracting, transforming, and loading (ETL) large datasets across various platforms.
* Data Visualisation – Developing meaningful dashboards and reports using Power BI or similar tools.
* Automation & Scripting – Proficiency in PowerShell, Python, or SQL scripting for automation and data processing.
Security & Compliance:
* Identity & Access Management (IAM) – Implementing best practices for secure authentication and authorisation.
* Enterprise Management & Governance – Ensuring compliance with government data protection policies and frameworks .
* Storage & Backup Solutions – Managing data storage, redundancy, and disaster recovery strategies.
Essential Criteria & Selection Requirements:
Candidates must demonstrate experience and provide a one-page pitch (max 5000 characters) addressing the following areas:
Data Engineering & Business Intelligence:
1. Business Intelligence (Level 3 - SFIA) – Ability to source, prepare, and analyse data to produce actionable insights.
2. Data Engineering (Level 5 - SFIA) – Designing data pipelines, architectures, and solutions to support operational and analytical needs.
3. Database Design (Level 4 - SFIA) – Developing and managing relational databases, data warehouses, and cloud-based data platforms .
4. Data Modelling & Design (Level 4 - SFIA) – Creating structured data models for improved data accessibility and efficiency.
5. Data Access & Integration (DCF Level 1 & 2) – Hands-on experience integrating, managing, and optimising large datasets across systems.
Security & Compliance:
1. Data Integrity & Quality Assurance (Level 2 - DCF) – Ensuring data trustworthiness, accuracy, and regulatory compliance .
2. Storage Management (Level 4 - SFIA) – Managing enterprise data storage, backup, and disaster recovery solutions.
3. Information Management (Level 5 - SFIA) – Implementing government standards for data governance and information security .
4. Identity & Access Management (IAM) – Implementing secure access controls across cloud and on-prem environments.
Technology & Innovation:
1. Automation & Scripting – Developing automation scripts for data processing, ETL, and system administration .
2. Data Visualisation (Level 4 - SFIA) – Building interactive dashboards using Power BI, Tableau, or similar tools .
3. Quality Assurance (Level 4 - SFIA) – Conducting formal compliance reviews, risk assessments, and process optimisations .
