The Project
Located in the small suburb of Loxford in the Hunter Valley region of New South Wales, approximately three km north of the town of Kurri Kurri, and approximately 35km west of Newcastle and 125 km north of Sydney.
The Hunter Power Station Project is expected to have approximately 660 megawatts and will be generated via two heavy-duty open cycle gas turbines, and a turbines functionality will be incorporated into the facility. Operations is considered a backup function in the case that gas supply to the site is not available, this will connect into the existing transmission, infrastructure located near the site.
The Role
We are seeking an experienced Commissioning Manager to oversee the commissioning phase of a major power utilities project based in Hunter Valley, NSW which is already in progress. The ideal candidate will ensure that all systems and equipment are installed, tested, operated, and maintained according to project specifications and regulatory standards. This role requires a proactive leader ideally with electrical power systems, commissioning processes, and a proven track record in managing commissioning activities for large-scale utility projects.
Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage the commissioning team, ensuring coordination between all project stakeholders, including engineers, construction managers, contractors, and operations teams.
Develop, implement, and manage detailed commissioning plans, schedules, and procedures in alignment with project timelines.
Oversee the commissioning of electrical infrastructure, including substations, transformers, switchgear, and transmission systems, ensuring all equipment meets performance standards and safety requirements.
Ensure compliance with relevant industry standards, codes, and regulations, as well as internal quality and safety protocols.
Identify and mitigate potential risks during the commissioning process, resolving technical issues and troubleshooting equipment malfunctions as needed.
Conduct system checks, functional tests, and inspections to verify operational readiness of electrical systems.
Provide clear and accurate progress reports to senior management, identifying key milestones, potential delays, and corrective actions.
Coordinate with the operations team to ensure a smooth handover process, ensuring all documentation, manuals, and certifications are in place.
Drive continuous improvement of commissioning processes and ensure lessons learned are captured and applied.
Manage commissioning budget, resources, and staffing, optimizing the allocation of manpower and equipment to meet project objectives.
Experience and Qualifications
A Tertiary Engineering qualification in an appropriate discipline or recognized industry equivalent.
Minimum 15 years experience in design and/or commissioning (preferable oil & gas or power).
Technical staff leadership experience.
Computer literacy and proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite of software packages.
Ability to mentor and develop other engineers.
Strong communication skills (oral & written) including strong negotiation and influencing skills and the ability to establish effective working relationships with a variety of people at different levels both internally and externally.
Demonstrated ability to work independently to organise and prioritise demands, handle multiple complex tasks simultaneously, set and meet deadlines and follow-through within a fast-paced environment with multiple and competing demands.
Proficient skills in computers: MS Word, Excel, Access, email.
