ROLE SUMMARY:
Be responsible for leading the French Department, with a focus on teaching French as a second language. This role involves overseeing curriculum development, promoting high teaching standards, and fostering a passion for language learning among students.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Lead and manage the Primary School French Department, including curriculum design, teaching strategies, and assessment practices, ensuring they meet the academic standards of Reddam House.
2. Oversee the professional development of Primary School French teachers, fostering collaboration and a commitment to continuous improvement in language teaching.
3. Teach French classes across various year levels from Year K to Year 8, demonstrating exemplary teaching practices and setting a high standard for student engagement and achievement in language learning.
4. Ensure that the French curriculum meets the requirements of the Australian Curriculum for French as a second language, promoting student-centred learning and language acquisition.
5. Develop and implement initiatives to encourage students' interest in the French language and culture, promoting literacy and communication skills.
6. Collaborate with other department heads and school leadership to integrate cross-curricular approaches, contributing to the school’s overall educational strategy.
7. Manage departmental resources, including budgeting, and ensure the availability of high-quality teaching materials relevant to second language learning.
8. Organise and oversee French-related extracurricular activities, such as language clubs, cultural events, and immersion programs, to deepen students' engagement with the language.
9. Act as a mentor and coach to Primary School French teachers, providing feedback, guidance, and support to help them develop their teaching practices and reach their full potential.
10. Communicate effectively with parents, guardians, and the broader school community regarding the Primary School French curriculum and student progress in language learning.
11. Ensure the French Department complies with all school policies, health and safety regulations, and relevant educational legislation.
12. Actively participate in school leadership meetings and contribute to strategic planning and decision-making processes that impact the language department and broader school initiatives.
13. May be required to assume the role of Year Coordinator and provide pastoral care for the relevant year group students from time to time, based on the needs of the school.
THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE:
1. Demonstrated leadership experience in an educational setting, with the ability to manage, support, and inspire a team of language teachers.
2. Strong understanding of language acquisition theories and pedagogical practices for teaching French to non-native speakers.
3. Experience in curriculum design and implementation, tailored to meet the needs of students learning French as a second language.
4. Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, with the ability to engage effectively with students, staff, parents, and external stakeholders.
5. Experience in using data to inform teaching practices and improve student learning outcomes.
6. Proficiency in managing budgets, resources, and departmental planning.
7. Experience in organising and leading extracurricular language-related activities, such as cultural exchanges, excursions, and language competitions.
8. Passionate about French language teaching and committed to inspiring students to develop language skills and cultural understanding.
9. Innovative and forward-thinking, with a drive to continually improve the quality of French education offered.
10. Strong leadership and mentoring skills, with the ability to motivate and support a team of teachers.
11. Approachable and empathetic, with a genuine concern for student welfare and development.
12. Highly organised and able to manage multiple priorities, including teaching responsibilities and department management.
