As our Payroll Manager, you’ll oversee all payroll-related activities, managing the entire payroll lifecycle for a diverse workforce. You’ll use your expertise in payroll systems, particularly Datacom, and your deep knowledge of Awards and Enterprise Agreements (EAs) to ensure accurate, efficient, and compliant payroll processes. This role is hands-on and autonomous, offering the opportunity to identify inefficiencies, implement improvements, and deliver long-lasting operational excellence. You’ll collaborate closely with HR and Finance teams, provide expert advice to stakeholders, and ensure that payroll systems and data remain secure, reliable, and up-to-date. The role is based in North Sydney (hybrid working) with training based in Woollahra for your first 2-3 weeks. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:Payroll Management: • Process fortnightly and monthly payrolls for permanent, fixed-term, and casual staff across multiple campuses. • Manage third-party payments, including superannuation, payroll tax, and statutory deductions. • Maintain detailed employee records, covering new hires, terminations, and status changes. Awards & Enterprise Agreements (EAs): • Accurately interpret and apply complex Awards and EAs, ensuring correct pay calculations and compliance. • Provide advice and guidance to internal teams on Award and EA provisions, identifying potential risks or areas for improvement. Process Improvement: • Identify gaps or inefficiencies in current payroll processes, implementing effective and scalable solutions. • Standardise payroll procedures to ensure consistency, accuracy, and operational efficiency. Compliance & Reporting: • Ensure compliance with Australian payroll legislation, including taxation, superannuation, and reporting obligations. • Conduct regular payroll audits to ensure adherence to legislation, Awards, and EAs. • Prepare payroll journals, reconciliations, and reports, delivering accurate data to the Finance team. • Develop and maintain internal controls to minimise risks associated with payroll activities. Systems & Technology: • Own the Datacom payroll system, working with IT and the vendor to ensure optimal functionality and compliance. • Address system issues promptly and propose enhancements to improve performance. • Maintain seamless integration of payroll data with HRIS and financial systems. Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement: • Act as the primary contact for payroll-related enquiries, managing the payroll inbox and providing clear, timely communication to all stakeholders. • Work closely with HR and Finance teams to ensure smooth data flow and accurate reporting. • Collaborate with the New Zealand Payroll Manager to provide support and backup when needed. Leadership: • If applicable, supervise and mentor payroll support staff, fostering a culture of teamwork and professional growth.THE IDEAL CANDIDATE WILL HAVE: • Extensive experience in end-to-end payroll management, ideally within a complex, multi-site environment. • Proven experience using Datacom payroll software, with a deep understanding of its functionality. • Expertise in interpreting and applying Awards and EAs, with a strong grasp of Australian payroll legislation. • A track record of improving payroll processes, enhancing efficiency, and creating robust documentation. • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail to ensure accuracy and reliability in payroll operations. • Exceptional time management and the ability to prioritise tasks in a fast-paced environment. • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to build trust and provide expert advice to stakeholders. QUALIFICATIONS & REQUIREMENTS • Diploma or degree in Business Administration, Accounting, HR, or Finance (preferred). • Certificate IV in Payroll Administration or equivalent (advantageous). • Membership with a recognised payroll body, such as the Australian Payroll Association (APA) or The Association for Payroll Specialists (TAPS) • Current Working with Children Check (WWCC).
