The Chief Commercial Officer (CCO) is the driving force behind VRC's commercial growth with a core focus on elevating the brand, boosting membership sales, and enhancing customer engagement.
This role will lead the development of innovative marketing strategies to amplify VRC's presence across key channels, both digital and traditional, and ensure the brand resonates deeply with existing and potential members, partners and customers.
The CCO will leverage VRC's media rights to their full potential, maximising value in both the wagering and non-wagering sectors, while actively identifying and cultivating new revenue opportunities through emerging platforms and channels.
By strategically expanding VRC's media and content offerings, the CCO will help strengthen community outreach efforts and drive long-term brand loyalty and growth.
This role is pivotal in enhancing the overall brand identity of VRC, positioning it as a leader in the industry while creating lasting connections with both the racing community and broader audiences.
This role reports directly to the Chief Executive Officer and is based at our Flemington Precinct.
We offer a hybrid way of working although we operate in the events/hospitality space and evening/weekend work will be required.
Areas of responsibility include:
Customer: experience, product innovation, membership, ticketing and hospitality race day management.
Commercial: sales, new business and corporate partnerships.
Community: corporate social responsibility, equine welfare, Lexus Melbourne Cup Tour and Melbourne Cup Foundation.
Events: event management and implementation.
Hospitality: management of our key partner Crown and all related food and beverage offerings.
Responsibilities
Strategic Planning & Innovation
Develop departmental strategy, ensuring alignment with the overall VRC vision and long-term goals and delivers an exceptional customer experience.
Drive VRC's vision and strategic objectives, ensuring alignment across departments.
Continuously identify new opportunities for racing initiatives, staying ahead of industry trends to maintain VRC's competitive edge in the marketplace.
Oversee club-wide international strategy including commercial partners, wagering and tourism.
Lead and inspire a culture of high performance, collaboration, and continuous improvement; actively support professional growth of the team.
Monitor financial performance against targets, driving commercial growth through sponsorships, media partnerships, and content sales.
Ensure budgets are met and operational expenses are optimised.
Strategic Partnerships
Build and nurture relationships with sponsors, media partners, and community stakeholders to enhance commercial and community outcomes.
Commercial
Create a strong pipeline of commercial opportunities.
Retention of current corporate accounts.
Strategic plan around new business opportunities.
Vision on how to sell the Flemington Precinct all year round - race day and non-race day events, functions and activations.
Membership/Ticketing
Lead strategies for member acquisition, retention, engagement, and value, driving long-term growth and maximising membership and ticket sales revenue.
Have a clear strategic plan for our key partner - Ticketmaster, always looking for ways to enhance the relationship and offerings.
Community
Build a community-driven strategic plan through our Cup Tour, Foundation and general CSR initiatives.
Events
Oversee the delivery of world-class events and activations that enhance the VRC brand and customer experience.
Qualifications & Experience
Tertiary qualification in marketing, business, sports management, or a related discipline, with a minimum of 10 years in sponsorship, sales, marketing, or media rights management.
Deep understanding of the racing industry desirable.
Extensive experience driving revenue, partnerships, and business growth through innovative media, marketing, and membership initiatives, with a proven ability to lead multi-functional commercial teams.
Demonstrated success in managing cross-functional teams and building strong relationships with sponsors, media partners, and industry stakeholders, underpinned by excellent communication, negotiation, and relationship-building skills.
Key Performance Indicators
Revenue Growth:
Measure year-on-year growth in revenue from membership and general admission sales, media rights, content distribution and sponsorships.
Partnerships & Stakeholder Relations:
Build and maintain strong relationships with key partners, sponsors, and community stakeholders, enhancing collaboration and driving strategic growth initiatives.
Customer Engagement Metrics:
Improve customer satisfaction and engagement across VRC's race day events, digital channels, and content offerings.
